Color Poppin’ Papa

To be perfectly honest, this was frustrating. But I was determined to finish what I started and I do actually like the way it came out.

This was the original photo.

And here is my final product.

I had a couple failed attempts using online photo editing. Failed attempt number one was Photoshop Express. It didn’t have enough tools to do exactly what I wanted, but it was my starting point. I used the “pop-color” tool under “effects” to make everything black and white beside the orangey colors. However, Papa’s skin tone happens to be closer to the color of his shades than I would have guessed. So, all his skin remained orange along with his sun glasses.

This is where I turned to Avairy; failed attempt number two. I seem to be having some issue with uploading images. This message pops up with a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo with works like “null” and “operator” and lots of little symboly things. So after looking for different approaches myself and using “the Google” to troubleshoot the problem, I got frustrated and moved on.

Then I moved on to Picnik. Here I found a tool that I knew would do the job, but would be time intensive. I used the “focal B&W” tool under the “area” listing in the “effects” tab. This allowed me to change a circular area to be black and white or invert the tool to select an area that I wanted to remain colored. Because the tool is round and can not be used in strokes (aka it just does dot-shaped changes, I had to repeatedly select small areas to change. This was a pain.

When I was finally done dotting away the color, I saved the image to my computer. Then I cropped a little of the picture that I thought was distracting out and straightened it up a bit. And then, my work was complete! This was a two-star assignment (although the long-cut that I’m certain I took made it seem like I should be getting a few more stars for creative way to extend the time taken on an assignment. Just sayin’ :) ).

**A note about this picture: This is my Papa! I love him a whole lot. I love this picture because it captures his silliness. A few years ago, for his birthday my sister bought him these ridiculous wrap-around sunglasses she saw advertized on tv. They were supposed to be trendy wrap-arounds. Clearly that is an oxymoron (which is fitting, because wearing the glasses makes you look like a moron). My siblings and I are always goofing on my dad because he does weirdo things like wearing sunglasses over his regular glasses (equaling two pairs of glasses at one time). He does this in public and couldn’t care less who sees him. This is why I love my dad. He is silly and doesn’t care who knows it. That’s why my dad is wearing these enormous bright orange sunglasses, because he is fantastic.
