Movie Trailer Mashup — Zombie Melancholia

The assignment: mash together two movie trailers to completely change the meaning of the original trailer.

I ended up using the trailer from Melancholia — which is about two sisters dealing with the possibility that Earth will be destroyed in a collision with another planet — and mashing it up with a bunch of zombie stuff.  I’m not quite sure where the idea came from, as I’m not a fan of zombie flicks generally, but Kirsten Dunst’s character in Melancholia has some crazy and somewhat creepy moments, so I decided to go with it.  The audio comes from the trailer for Dawn of the Dead; I thoroughly butchered it in Audacity to try to make it match a bit more. It came out a little choppy, but oh well.  The video portion is a somewhat less butchered version of the original Melancholia trailer, with one other small clip taken from this (for Dunst’s zombie face) and zombie clips from the Walking Dead trailer.

I used MPEG Streamclip to isolate all the clips I wanted from the other trailers, then imported everything into iMovie to assemble them all.  I found this assignment pretty difficult, and have mad respect for those who can do these mashup type things well. I’m not all that happy with how it came out, but it seems about time to move on to some other assignments.

This is the original trailer, in case you’re interested:
