What the Hell is a Remix??

For this assignment I was asked to do some research on the concept of remix and mashup by reviewing at least two of the references listed on the concepts and analyzing at least 3 of the examples listed. After reviewing everything I was asked to write up a blog post summarizing my understanding of remix, and explaining how the examples you watched demonstrated the form.

Here is the first reference that I used:

Everything is a Remix Part 1 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.

I basically learned from this source that the concept of remix is basically when you combine or editing existing material to form something new. This term originally applied to music, and was extremely popular in Hip Hop music.

Here is the second reference that I used:

Everything is a Remix Part 3 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.

This video put a emphasis on every creative thing the we have ever come in contact with is in some form a copy of something else. Mostly anything and everything that someone has created was copied in some form. In fact, some of the greatest things that have been created have come from combining different works together to form something totally brand new.

Both of these videos basically just highlighted to me that when we look at any creation, whether it is our favorite song, a light bulb, or etc. everything is made by someone trying to copying something else. This system of copying has helped us create some of most amazing things and has helped us improve something greatly! An that some of the best things have come from the combining of two things or more in order to create something totally new.

Here are three examples that I caught my eye on our course website that demonstrate the concept of remix:

I picked these 3 examples because i felt as though they each exemplified the concept of remix. Each of these examples combines two completely different elements, but makes in some sense a new creation. The demonstrate the idea of copying that was discussed in the second reference video I reviewed and show how combining things can make take the so called original work to a new level.
