Week In Review | This Week Kicked MY Butt!

Thinking about storytelling really isn’t something I had really done, or so I thought.  Apparently I have a lot to say and I think a lot about stories and storytelling.  The key is it’s NOT just pen and paper.

I tell stories with the art I make: ceramic sculpture, paintings, and the words I write.  I am working to become an Art Therapist right now.  I will graduate from UMW this May, and am hoping to enter Eastern Virginia Medical School in the fall (I will know soon!)  As an art therapist I hope to be able to help survivors of sexual assault tell THEIR story, and empower them to become whole again.

One of our assignments this week was to look at and make our own version of Kurt Vonnegut’s Shape of Stories.

One word.  MASTER.

Funny, smart, and honest Vonnegut hit the nail on the head with this one!  I hadn’t thought of this as a way to think of stories, but seriously—it totally works, and I know I will have a picture of a story shape now every time I watch an interesting movie, show, or read a book.  Simple, straightforward and completely spot on.

I worked with an everyday show, The Property Brothers on HGTV.  This series, like most I suspect have a recipe, a formula.  Lows, highs, a hook, and a well wrapped up finish.  It was really fun to look at this and realize the producers/directors actually did this.  How did I not notice this before?

OH! If I look at the 5 card flickr I made it even has a shape!

Looking at past ds106er’s work not only intrigued me, it IN[SPIRED] me!  Each piece puts another piece in the puzzle that is story telling.  The pieces I chose really reiterate that less is more, and the emotion we put into our stories, the personality, and closeness to our hearts we share are what make great stories.

I really love the daily creates.  For some reason I have had a hard time working more than just the required into my life at this point.  I’m hoping this will all calm down, I just need to plan more carefully.

It is so nice to just take a few minutes each day and MAKE.

The ones I did this week were fun!  BSOD-yeah, invention—I have been DIEING to share this one! And the math in action- came out fun, just did it for fun.

I heart comments; I like writing them and of course I LUUUURVE getting them!  That part is purely selfish.  I have always loved feedback, constructive criticism, and hearing how I can improve as well as what I do well.  Hey, I’m human!

I was never a real commenter on other blogs, more of lurker, but now I think that is changing.  Having that conversation with the author is insightful and FUN.  Each commenter and author that responds offers a new perspective.  It is so interesting to see how differently 2 people can react to one thing.  It’s a real eye opener.

My comment group includes Amber, Micaela, Sarah and Kelsie.  These gals are making great work; funny, clever, interesting, and thought provoking.  I think each gal commented somewhere on my site and for that I am thankful.

Overall this week went well, jam packed but well.  I think everything is falling into place and I am looking forward to more!
