This week we looked at Web Design in DS106.  I was a bit intimidated at first, but it was so much fun once I installed the x-ray goggles!  When I first read the assignment I thought that I might want to do the Google search story but after today’s weather I decided to go a different route and change the Weather Channel’s web site for Fredericksburg’s weather conditions!

Here’s what our page actually looks like:

Here’s what it looked like after I edited it:

Hard to see, but you can look at the whole page here.

That seriously was the most fun I’ve had with an assignment for this class though.  Having the power to manipulate what the page looks like without having to have mastered HTML or Java or whatever the page was written in was a ton of fun and made me feel so powerful!  I absolutely plan on using this in the future!

My three daily creates for this week were about a girl named Mae who lived in a very plain, flat, boring world.  There was no color and no landscape, and everything was dull.

In fact, this was her license plate:

Eventually she was able to find a new, exciting world in which there were hills and bridges and colors EVERYWHERE.  You can read about that place here if you wish, but in the mean time, here’s a picture:

Since I really enjoyed using the x-ray goggles, I decided to do the “Youtube it Your Way” assignment from the bank.  For mine, I edited a youtube video page for a cute lamb hopping around a house and made it a page about President Obama.  Some of the video titles do have related things to what is in those videos, but really the page has absolutely nothing to do with President Obama.  Here’s  a glimpse of it before :

And here’s what it looked like afterward:

Here’s the  actual page if you’d like to see everything I tweeked.

The second assignment from the bank that I chose was called “What They Might Have Done With Social Media.”  I was really tempted to do something with activism but instead went for a little humor/history/religion to tie in my major to something in this class.  My major is religion, if you didn’t know that about me yet.  I made a Facebook/Fakebook page and a tweet for Mary Magdalene.  I thought she would be fun because people always think of her as a prostitute or as the “repentant whore,” when really the only references to her in the Bible say very very little about her and certainly don’t tell the story people seem to know about her.  Here’s her facebook page as well as a tweet that she posted about two years after Jesus died.

I also created a fictional character to post comments on people’s blogs.  My character’s name was Karen, a 52-year-old mom from Minnesota with a daughter in college.  She is very behind-in-the-times and is totally astonished by the things people can do with technology, and is also very gullible.  For her, everything changes so rapidly that she thinks even things that obviously aren’t right are probably just new fads or ideas.

The files I recycled to Phonar were titled: “catsdontlikesnow.MOV,” “thecats.jpg,” “cheesypickupline.jpg,” and “mooseonadashboard.jpg.”
