This week I wanted to search something combined with "garden" theme and technology. Guess what I found on Youtube? A digital story called “Meet Farmbot.” The video demonstrates humanity’s first open-source CNC farming machine. The FarmBot Genesis, developed by Rory Aronson — which has been taking pre-orders since July — is capable of planting seeds and then watering them precisely. What’s more, all of its plastic components can easily be 3D printed, while its flat connecting plates can be made with either a waterjet, plasma or laser cutter, a CNC mill, or even a hacksaw and drill press. The three-axis machine employs linear guides in the X, Y, and Z directions, which allows for tooling such as seed injectors, watering nozzles, sensors, and weed removal equipment to be accurately positioned. Impressively, FarmBot can cultivate a variety of crops in the same area simultaneously. With all the cool features, I am screaming in my head after watching the video:" I WANT one too!"
What types of “involvement” – by the author/creator(s), participant(s), and/or audience – are apparent in this story?
Rory Aronson worked hard behind the scene to create this device. The creator of this video made great effort to make this story engaging and sleek. There isn’t obvious participants involvement though. The audience is involved via the comment section provided by Youtube.
How would you characterize the “literacy dimensions” present in this story?
The story is focused on introducing the cutting edge farming technology. It is very well structured as the story scaffolds in front of our eyes. Highlighted text with image emphasis the features of this device. The music of the this video complements the story nicely. It brings the story of strong sense of future and technology.
What are the online spaces and sites that bring this story to life? Why do these spaces and sites matter to the impact of the given story?
This story was hosted on Youtube but I also found it on TedTalk, Yahoo news and Twitter. These space are popular platform for people to learn about new technology and things in trend.
Based upon your assessment of involvement and literacy dimensions, what modifications and changes to this digital story might improve aspects of narrative, production, media usage, and/or audience engagement?
There was really nothing to improve upon in this story. I felt that it was well put together, and presented in an authentic way. It was hosted in a space easy for visitors to find, and it allowed for audience participation. I look forward to watching more videos from this creator.
