Digital Media II Final

Ever since I started taking classes to earn my digital media degree, I have been able to apply everything I learn on a daily basis because I am head designer and brander of the musical group I am apart of, Room 347. For this particular blog post I will be talking about a page on the website created. Here’s the link to the webpage.

An electronic press kit is an essential for any band that is serious about getting somewhere with their music. Essentially, an EPK is suppose to be able persuade whomever into giving your band attention, whether it be venues, promoters, or other music professionals. There’s a ton of marketing strategy involved with making an EPK.

Marketing Design Aspect

When creating this webpage, there were a few key points I had in mind. It needed to be easily on one page, it needed to look professional, and it needed to have everything you want to know about a band on it.

One of the easiest ways to make something look professional is to have professional photography on it. Luckily, we are friends with a real-deal photograper that was generous enough to take some pretty sweet photos of us. Ideally, these should be one of the first things a viewer would see, making their brain think that this band must be professional since they have professional photos.

Following the professional theme, I needed to present a professional logo. I designed the logo myself, so it’s not technically designed by a professional, though I sought professional opinion and criticism when designing the logo. I think our logo is a pretty good one, at least compared to several bands. Bands and musicians are particularly known for having amazing logos.

Once I got past hypnotizing people into believing that they are looking at a professional band, it was time to display the most important things you need to know about a band. It’s a group of musicians, so naturally, our music has to be on there. A couple MP3s and a music video of key songs got this accomplished. After that, all you really care about in the band is the people and their story, so the biography and members followed.

Artistic Design Aspect

Spacing was absolutely key with this webpage. I wanted the viewer to consume information in chunks, which is why there are headers for each section to guide what the viewer is thinking. Each section is closely spaced together as well to emphasize this.

The colors I chose needed to closely follow the theme of professionalism that the marketing aspect focused on. Thus, I chose colors I think of when I think of the word “professional”. As you can see, these colors were mostly black and white, with a few carefully placed colorful elements.

One of the core values of Room 347  is our value of design, so I spent a very long time carefully placing things and coloring things so that it all lined up well. I chose to have it all centered to follow trends in website design today.

Conclusion

I’m very proud of this EPK because it encompasses a slew of all the design work I’ve been conjuring up outside of school. I can tell which designs are older, because the newer designs are far better than the old ones. That just means I’m still improving technically and mentally as a designer and digital media artist. I’m open to criticism about the EPK or any of the elements on it like the logo or the bananafish illustration. Even the smallest comments could lead to a revolution in my learning.
