Swamps!  What does this word bring to mind?  Muck and mosquitoes and a big stink!  I’ve been knee-deep in the muck of more than one swamp.  They aren’t terribly pretty but they are important.

Biodiversity has to thank, in large part, these amazing wetlands.  Yes, even those stinky swamps!  These diverse ecosystems support a tremendous variety of life.  

For many of us, water simply flows from a faucet, and we think little about it beyond this point of contact. We have lost a sense of respect for the wild river, for the complex workings of a wetland, for the intricate web of life that water supports.

Native Americans called them “between lands”. They are not really land and not really water. Native Americans understood their value and so should we. Wetlands are amazing ecosystems, one of the most productive on the planet.
