    A Short Western Animation

    by
For my final assignment this week, I created a short animated trailer for an assignment I created, called “Create Your Own Animated Trailer.” I was inspired to do this by another assignment that had you create a western trailer on a whiteboard, but I wanted to take it a step further and try my hand at animating with my iPad! For this assignment, I used an app called Procreate. Procreate is a neat artistic app that is availably exclusively on iPad, and allows you to make just about any kind of art you want. At first I thought about trying to digitally recreate a Bob Ross painting (which I still might do!) but decided to try and use the animation features for this assignment. To animate using Procreate, you have to draw each frame by hand. I wanted this trailer to have a specific western noir-esque look, so I stuck to certain charcoal looking pens. I mainly used silhouettes to enhance that noir look. I actually drew all the silhouettes myself. You can use photos as references in Procreate, so I used them as references and drew them to look as similar as possible. I took me a long time to do this. I actually started on this project Saturday night and only finished Tuesday evening. The entire project was actually roughly eleven different project files in Procreate before I combined them together using iMovie. You can download animations in Procreate as MP4 files, which made making the video a lot easier. I also created still text slides, so it appears to emulate a silent film. I cannot take credit for the text, though. It comes from the intro of Red Dead Redemption 2, the video game that in-part inspired me to make this animation. The music also comes from RDR2 intro. I thought it fitting to use the haunting music that opens RDR2, because that game does not have a happy ending. I don’t imagine this having a happy ending either. Hopeful, maybe. But not happy. Like the silhouette animations, I made the text stills by using Procreate. The writing is my own, using a Logitech stylus to try my hardest to make it look elegant and fancy. Afterwards, I compiled everything in iMovie, adjusting the zoom and hover settings before adding the music. And that’s the final project! Tell me what you think down below! I know this probably isn’t my best work, but this is my first time doing something like this and I rather like how it turned out!

    Music That Fits The Movie

    by
For my second assignment this week, I decided to complete the “Watching Movies With the Stereo On” assignment. Since my third assignment is going to be one that is worth quite a bit of stars (stay tuned!), I decided to do a smaller one to bump myself up to the ten star mark! This assignment was very easy. Pick a clip, mute the sound, add music, and publish! However, I wanted to pick a clip and a song that fit together. So I got to thinking and remembered one of my favorite fight scenes in a movie. Bruce Willis versus Karl Urban in RED (2010) is one of my favorite scenes, because Urban’s character is surprised when Willis sneaks into the CIA. The two fight, they both end up injuring each other badly, and it’s just hilarious because it shows how an old guy like Willis can still be awesome in a fight, while Urban’s character thinks Willis won’t be that much of an issue. If you haven’t seen the movie, I’d recommend it. RED stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous” and features Bruce Willis, a retired CIA agent, on the run after the CIA calls a hit on him. The movie is full of action and doesn’t take itself seriously, making it an excellent comedy as well. In order to do this assignment, I had to first download the clip I wanted to use. Thankfully, YouTube is a goldmine when it comes to these things, and I found a clip that didn’t cut too much of the scene out. The old VLC-Codec trick came in handy here (basically it decodes the video and lets you download it) and I was soon free to start editing. I used the Windows Video Editor. One thing I’d like to point out is that the movie already has a song playing in this scene, Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle Again.” The song is faint, and it cuts out when the camera isn’t on the fight. I wanted to take that song and make it the most prominent thing in the video. Thankfully, I own a copy of the song because I have Aerosmith’s Devil’s Got A New Disguise album, which has this song on it. I simply ripped it from the CD and uploaded it to the video. I messed around with the song a bit, so the guitar would really kick in when Willis throws the table, and then tested to see how it played with the rest of the visuals. I really like how it turned out. I think it makes the scene a little funnier too, especially since the song kind of emphasizes Willis’s experience in these matter and implying Urban is a bit of a rookie. Plus the meaning of “back in the saddle” really fits the theme of the movie! Give it a watch! Tell me what you think in a comment down below!

    Lyrical Aventure

    by
For my first assignment of the week, I wanted to create something that people love yet is very controversial on YouTube: a lyric video. This is the “Create A Lyric Video” assignment from the DS106 assignment bank. I decided to start off with this assignment since it is worth a whopping four and a half stars and I am doing the second option we were given for the week that involved us completing tens stars worth of assignments. The song I decided to create a lyric video for is “Tuff Enuff” by the Fabulous Thunderbirds (1986). I first heard this song while driving home from work one night, listening to old reruns of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. American Top 40 began in 1970 and played the top forty hits from the Billboard charts. There are a few radio stations in Richmond and Fredericksburg that replay the 1980s countdowns, and involve Kasem telling stories about the artists on the countdown, playing long-distance deductions (that arrived by snail-mail), and taking a look back at the 1950s and 1960s at times. I listen to American Top 40 because I love 1980s music and culture, and listening to it is almost like being transported by to the 1980s. I remembered this song in particular because it was one I had somehow never heard before, and I know a lot of ’80s songs. Kasem told a story about the drummer, Fran Christina, and how the Canadian Mounties had to go find him for the band, which was amusing. Then, I forgot the song and the drummer’s name. I spent a month searching for the song before finding it again, and I plan to never let it go! To start off, I tried my hand at creating a presentation that would sync up with the music and highlight text as the corresponding lyrics were sung. I thought it was great, but it failed when I tried to record it. However, I was not deterred! I decided to try and do something with the official music video, which is colorful and amusing in itself. I downloaded the video from YouTube using the VLC Media Player Codec trick (which I won’t describe here, on the offhand chance they try and patch it) and uploaded the video to the Windows Video Editor. I’d like to point out Windows Video Editor and Windows Movie Maker are two different things, and unfortunately Movie Maker is not compatible with my computer. The Video Editor can be found within the Photo Editor, which is both confusing and surprising. I also have OpenShot, but it’s a bit finicky, and did not have the proper tools for what I did to the video. The Video Editor has split and trim tools that let you look at it down to the second. Basically what I did was go through the video, and every time I heard a verse, slit the video. I did this for every verse. This took a long time, since the Video Editor is not that precise and I had to be very precise with my mouse. The result played effortlessly, like the original video, but now I could go through and add animated text for the lyrics without them overlapping. Adding the lyrics was simple, but time consuming. I Googled the lyrics, despite knowing them by heart. I wanted to make sure I had them correct and added them one by one to each of the split sections. Plus, I had to ensure they started and stopped at appropriate times, which took some adjusting in the settings. I wanted it to look cartoonish and used a subtitle option called “Joy” that let me use the colorful subtitle fonts. I personally think it makes the lyrics look more alive as the video plays. A final thing I did was tint the video lightly, using a filter called “Sunset” to make the colors pop out a little more to compliment the lyrics. Now all that was left was to upload it to YouTube. As I’m sure we are all aware, DMCA takedowns can be a pain, meaning videos you upload to YouTube can be blocked, taken down, or have segments removed if they infringe copyright. You are supposed to be able to use copyrighted media for educational use (like in this class), but YouTube doesn’t allow you to identify whether or not your video is educational or not. I seem to remember there being a place to identify that, but I couldn’t find it when uploading this. Thankfully, YouTube let me leave it as unlisted without removing any of the visuals or audio, despite it being blocked just about everywhere. If this is no longer the case at the time of anyone watching this video, please let me know. I can always upload it to Vimeo if something happens. Please leave a comment down below and tell me what you think!

    Projects & Remixes

    by
This week was a fairly light week, which I appreciated after working on the radio projects. I honestly needed a short break after that project and all the other assignments I have been working on this week for other classes. However, I still appreciated the assignments we were required to do and enjoyed doing them immensely. I got to revisit two previous assignments and revise them. I decided to focus on a postcard and a song I made, making sure to challenge myself a bit for both assignments! I also got to listen the our radio shows on DS106 Radio! Afterwards I had some time to brainstorm some project ideas, however I haven’t quite figured out what I want to do! This Week’s Daily Creates! This week we were asked to incorporate three Daily Creates into a story. I was a bit of an overachiever and managed to incorporate four by picking three and using them as a prompt for the National Day on Writing. I won’t be posting my Daily Creates here like normal since I have included all of them in a post of their own! You can check them out, as well as the story I made, by clicking on the link down below! Commenting and Participation! We’re back this week commenting like normal! Like always, I’ve provided links to some of the most interesting blogs I’ve commented on this week! Be sure to check them out! And please check out my own blog as well! Color Changer (Rework) Another Bob Ross moment! My First Song: Revisited

    by
For my second rework assignment in DS106, I wanted to revisit the song I made for the “Play DJ & Make A Song” assignment. I stated in the original that I created this song using GarageBand after it came pre-installed on my new iPad. Since then I have bought a new keyboard case and a stylus for future art and animation projects in Procreate, however the stylus also came in handy when moving around sound files in GarageBand. I had previously stated at the time I made the first song that I had no experience with the program. I still have very little experience with it, but I’ve managed to figure out enough so create a remix of my original song that is over three minutes long! I spent over two hours working on this song, because I had to figure out how to edit sound files without totally destroying them. The basic idea of the song is still the same. I wanted the song to be able to be played continuously on a loop without the listening knowing where it begins and ends. I was inspired to to this after watching a video (that I cannot find anymore, sadly) on how Nintendo’s music for their games and consoles has that same looping quality. Since I had already made the song, all I had to do was cut and paste sections. I spent a lot of time just listening to it, trying to figure out which instruments sounded good together. I wanted it to have an intro and and outro, and used the guzheng (which is that Japanese twangy sound all throughout the song) as the basis, since I thought it was the most recognizable sound. From there I introduced bass and drums before moving into the synthesizers. There is one section of the song that only has the guzheng and drums playing before moving back into the song. I did this to give it some variety before continuing onto the outro. Please give the remix a listen! I’d suggest listening to it on a loop. Like before, I experimented with the premade instrumental sets in GarageBand, playing it by ear to create an interesting piece. It has all the same elements as the original, but is now more spaced out and has layers and sections where it sounds slightly different. Please tell me what you think in a comment down below! I’ll also include a link to the original assignment if anyone wants to take a look at that!

National Day On Writing: A Daily Create Story

    by
This week we did something a little different with Daily Creates than normal. Usually we just complete a set number, but this time we had to use them to tell a story. It was suggested that we do three of them and then tie them together to create a story. We could use create from this week and form last week if we needed to, so I chose three that inspired me the most. It was suggested we hyperlink them together, but I decided on something different. I took inspiration from three separate Daily Creates to generate a story for October 20th, the National Day on Writing. I’ll embed the tweets just below then include the story I wrote that ties them all together! Heroic Misadventures Explosions rocked the streets of Fulton as a man dressed in a suit made of tinfoil marched down main street. Emergency sirens wailed and people rand for cover as the unnamed assailant points finger guns all around him, seemingly making things explode. The Fulton police were huddled around their chief, ducking behind a police car in the hope of not getting blown up. One brave cop tries run right at the man but gets blown right back down the street for his efforts. “Hahahaha! Pew! Pew! Is this the best the cops can throw at me? Pew! Pew!” The villain cackled, making something else explode. The police chief looks over at his men, a hopeful smile on his face, and delivers some good news. “Don’t worry, men! I’ve called for backup! Greased Lighting is on the way! __________ Meanwhile at the local superhero headquarters, a petit blonde woman answers a phone with her biggest fake smile plastered on her face. “Hello, this is Heroes United! My name is Stacey. What can I help you with today?” Bored, Stacey absently takes notes on her computer, humming and nodding in all the appropriate places like she had been taught to placate a client. “I understand the need for urgency. I’ll contact him right away. Thank you for calling Heroes United! We hope you have a super day!” Stacey hung up the phone, rolling her eyes, before paging the hero known as Greased Lightning. Seriously, who came up with these names? “Greased Lightning, you’re needed in downtown Fulton. Code red. Oh, and the police chief says hello.” Stacey then goes back to watching videos online and planning what she wants to do on her next day off. __________ “You called me for this?” Asked the hero known as Greased Lightning. “He was causing a ruckus!” said the Fulton police chief. According to his badge, his name was Jeff. “He was making things explode!” “He was throwing firecrackers, Jeff! You made me think he had psychic powers he channeled through his hands! I’ve probably ruined his life! I’ve definitely ruined his hands!” The apprehended villain who had previously caused so much trouble for the Fulton police laid prone on the ground, clutching his broken hands to his chest, and crying. He was babbling nonsense and doing his best to glare at the hero, but the pain proved to be too much. His tinfoil outfit was even more crumpled than before, and his hat lay in the dirt a few feet away. Greased Lightning shook his head. He hadn’t even needed to bound and gag him. The unnamed villain, and Greased Lightning scoffed at that description, had simply given up. He’d excited when the hero showed up. The man had apparently been making things explode with his mind. Jeff had told him the man make this happen by making finger guns and pointing them at objects. The hero had assumed he needed his hands to channel his powers, and swiftly dealt with the problem. It was only afterwards he learned the man had no powers at all and had been throwing firecrackers. “I just got a call from the station. A mental patient escaped from Fulton Hospital fitting the description of our villain.” Jeff explains, looking a little sheepish as he does so. “Great! I’ve just injured an escaped mental patient! That makes me feel so much better about myself, Jeff!” The hero watched as paramedics loaded the man into an ambulance. He turns back to Jeff. “I think you’ve got it from here, Jeff. I’m going to go finish watching the game. The Cardinals were just starting to pull ahead when you called!” “We they? I’ll have to head back to the station and watch it myself. Have a nice day, Greased Lightning!” “You too, chief!” __________ Meanwhile, in the cold reaches of space, a man in an astronaut’s suit is reading aloud from a data pad while a chicken roosts nearby. The finishes reading aloud and looks to the chicken expectingly. “And that’s all I’ve got so far! What do you think, chicken?” The chicken in question cocks their head to the side, narrowing their eyes and letting out a disdainful crow. “It’s not that bad! Like you could do anything better! If you haven’t noticed, we’re trapped in space and we’ve both already read everything in this ship! I’ve even read all the crash reports, and they’re nothing but depressing news informing us we’ll be stuck here indefinitely!” The chicken flaps their wings and lets out an indignant cluck, before turning around to presumably ignore the astronaut. The astronaut scowls. “That’s the last time I share any of my original work with you! Don’t come clucking to me when you’re seeking approval for something you worked very hard on!” The chicken lets out a low cluck, causing the astronaut to throw the data pad at them. “Say that again, you ignorant drumstick!” The End Now that you’ve read this story, I’d like to point out its meant to be a parody that satirizes superhero comic and cartoon logic. It’s also intentionally bad, since it’s meant to be a comedy, written from the perspective of a hapless individual who stranded in space with a chicken (which is the entire premise of the video game Breathedge, the video mentioned in my first Daily Create). Being stranded in space must be boring, so this individual has taken to writing ridiculous stories and reading them to the chicken, who is less than impressed by his writing abilities. The entire idea is that he write a story about people just as hapless and helpless as him. Meanwhile the “hero” makes mistakes, just like him. It felt fitting and I really had to write this story down once the idea came to mind! I’m also very happy I got to incorporate it into a forth Daily Create, making the situation even better!

    Postcard: Revisited

    by
I originally completed the “Postcards From Magical Places” assignment back in Week 6, where I made a postcard for the 4077 MASH unit from the television show M*A*S*H. However, anyone who may had read that post might remember that I mentioned I originally did not want to generate a postcard from M*A*S*H. Instead, I wanted to make a postcard for Stalag 13, the World War II German P.O.W. camp that serves as the setting of the television series Hogan’s Heroes. I mentioned back then that I wasn’t sure how to incorporate an image from the show into a postcard, since I could not find any aerial views of the set the show was filmed on. To make matters worse, the set was burned down in the 1970s while making another movie, so there aren’t any modern-day pictures to base it off of. However, there are plenty of photographs online that feature the cast in their costumes, which gave me an idea that I didn’t have before. In true Hogan’s Heroes fashion, I devised a concept that makes the Nazis look utterly foolish. The one looking the most foolish in this case is Colonel Wilhelm Klink, the German Kommadant of Stalag 13 (played by Werner Klemperer). A running gag in the show is that Klink is, so be frank, a gullible idiot. He can be talked into almost anything by his senior P.O.W. officer, American Colonel Robert E. Hogan (played by Bob Crane). Now, the prisoners of Stalag 13 are not being held there by force. They’re there by choice. You see, the entire concept of the show is that the prisoners are running an underground espionage and sabotage ring, quite literally underneath the P.O.W. camp. However the Nazis don’t know this, and Hogan and his “heroes” are constantly manipulating Klink and the other Germans into helping them, or throwing them off their trail by order of Allied High Command back in London. The story I came up for rework assignment was that the prisoners made off with Colonel Klink’s military-issued stationary, leaving behind custom made postcards that make the P.O.W. camp look like a vacation resort. Now, this is something I could see the heroes doing. The cover story is that it is a practical joke meant to irritates Klink (which they take great pleasure in), however they needed Klink’s official Luftwaffe paperwork to forge documents to free another prisoner. The stationary will reappear, but not before Klink has to pen a letter to his commanding officer, General Albert Burkhalter of the Luftwaffe. Having no other stationary available, Klink uses one of the postcards the prisoners left behind in his office. The writing on the postcard is in German, though since I do not speak the language I used Google Translate. I apologize to anyone reading this who knows German, however I wanted it to appear as authentic as possible since it is supposed to be from Klink’s perspective. The letter says the following: General Burkhalter, Forgive this vulgar form of correspondence, but it appears all my stationary has gone missing. I have no doubt the prisoners are the ones responsible, and they shall be dealt with accordingly! I am writing to inform you that the Gestapo has finished their investigation and have found no lead on the elusive Underground agent, Papa Bear. They will be moving on to Dusseldorf until further notice. Oh, and greetings from Stalag 13, Herr General! Colonel Wilhelm Klink This short letter include many references to the show. The Gestapo (the Nazi secret state police) are constantly showing up at Stalag 13 for some reason or another. I image their presence is why the heroes need Klink’s stationary to forge documents, mainly to release an important prisoner from them. They do this by performing a sabotage operation out near Dusseldorf, which is a place in Germany that is constantly mentioned in the show. They play it off like Papa Bear, the elusive allied agent, is the one responsible. Little do the Gestapo know that Colonel Robert Hogan is, in fact, Papa Bear, and are being led away from him and suspicion of him and his tear. And he letter isn’t complete without Klink making a foolish remark, hence the final sentence, “Greeting from Stalag 13!” I personally like to imagine Klink getting a phone call from Burkhalter after the “letter” arrives and berating Klink for using such a childish mode of correspondence. I can just imagine him telling Klink off, and saying something like, “What would the Führer (Adolf Hitler) think of one of his Luftwaffe generals passing around postcards like schoolchildren?!” Afterwards, Hogan would make a remark: “What’s wrong, Kommandant? Did General Burkhalter not like our craftmanship?” To that, Klink would forcibly dismiss Hogan (“Disssss-missed!”) and sulk in his chair, ending much like an episode of the show. Having time to rework this assignment was really fun. I made the original M*A*S*H postcard in a hurry, so having time to think out a scenario for the original idea I had was really fun! I’m happy I got to create it too! Now it’s not bugging me so much that I didn’t get to complete the assignment how I wanted to! Unlike the M*A*S*H postcard, I decided to use Canva for this one. I had forgotten Canva allows you to make postcards, and I’m very happy with how this one turned out. I used a template that originally had a tropical scene on it as the basis, but then changed everything around. For one, there isn’t any English on this postcard! I used Google Translate quite a bit, changing the “Greetings from” to “Grüße aus” and so forth. I mentioned before the entire note is in German, though it might not be grammatically correct because of my use of Google Translate. I have no way of checking that unless I plan to learn German, which I sadly do not have time for. The image on the postcard is a fairly common one that pops up in Google Image Search, but the one I used can be found here. I also included a Nazi-era postage stamp that I found on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s website. Overall, reworking this assignment was a lot of fun! I’m glad I got to use my original idea instead of the throwaway one from the original assignment. That assignment is linked below for anyone interested in taking a look at that one! Tell me what you think in a comment down below!

    Our Very Own Radio Show!

    by
This week comes to an end with a bang, as everyone shares their radio show projects with the world! My group (We called ourselves The Fab Five!) consists of myself, Sarah Leonard, Erica Gonzalez, Mike Messina, and Skylar Joseph. We are proud to be sharing our recreation of the Roy Roger’s Show, but before we get to that I have some other thing’s I’d like to talk about. In the meantime, check out my second progress report on this project and then continue down below! While working on this project, I actually created another radio bumper since I felt we needed something to lead us out of the show! I posted it on SoundCloud, but you can listen to it here as well! I made it in about five minutes, recording the voiceover then using a copyright free song called “Pachelbel’s Canon” as the background music. This was all done in Audacity before I exported the file and uploaded it to SoundCloud. I’ve pretty much got these radio bumpers down to nothing at this point! Haha! This Week’s Daily Creates! Due to Fall Break making this week a short week, and the time allotted for groups to work on our radio projects, we only had to complete two Daily Creates this week! Here’s the two I completed! I got to show my interest in art and video games! Participation and Comments! This week was a little strange when it comes to comments and participation! Since we did not have many things do, there weren’t that many posts to comment on! However I still managed to find some! Some are from this week and a few are from last week that I didn’t see in time for my last weekly summary. Here’s the posts I commented on this week! And be sure to check out mine! I promise to respond back, even to the simplest comment! DoN’t PrEsS tHe BuTtOn Behind the Counter Progress 2 Creates This Week Radio Show Progress DS106 Radio Mixtape Radio Extras How to Survive: Advice From the Five Magical Instrument The GIF by the Window week eight daily creates The Roy Rogers Show! For our radio project we recreated an episode of the Roy Rogers Show, a radio drama from the 1950s. We used an episode script called “The Missing Scientist” and modified it slightly to include our class theme, Bob Ross. I actually explained all this in another post, so go there if you want a more in-depth explanation! We ran into some trouble Thursday night when technology decided to malfunction. This was mostly due to the large file size of the audio project, and an email got lost in limbo. There was also general technical difficulties since not all of us were on campus and could not meet in person for this project. And conducting an audio project such as this, especially when we don’t have much experience with audio editing, is hard! I was stressed most of the night because I had put a lot of effort into recording things and then rearranging the audio to include the radio bumpers and commercials created by our group! I am happy with how it turned out though! For a group with very little audio editing experience, I think we did rather well! Let me know in a comment down below what you think!

    TSM Radio Show Outro

Instead of doing the commercial like the assignment says to do, I decided to do an outro for my group’s radio show. Radio Show in Progress

    by
As Week 7 comes to a close, I am both thrilled and scared of what is to come. This is the first ever major audio project I’ve worked on (with a group of people, no less!) so I’ve a right to be a little frightened! However, this doesn’t stop me from diving headfirst into the assigned tasks for the week! This week our workload was cut down due to the radio show. While we all joined groups and divided the work among ourselves, we were still responsible for creating a promo or some kind, a progress report, as well as completing two audio assignments that will benefit our radio show. Each of the buttons below will take you to the assignments I completed this week, so be sure to check them out! This Week’s Daily Creates! This week we were told to complete three Daily Creates. I actually did more than three this week, but here’s three of my favorites from this week! Can you guess which one I enjoyed the most? ( ?° ?? ?°) All jokes aside, the Bicycle ones was my favorite simply because it immediately made me think of the Queen song. Anything that lets me share my love for Queen is amazing in my eyes! Comments of the Week! It was really fun getting to see everyone’s progress on their radio projects! I enjoyed looking through everyone’s blog posts and telling them what I liked about their the radio bumpers, posters, and music! I’ve also had fun responding to people who have viewed my posts! After checking out their posts, don’t forget to check out some of my own! I respond to everyone who comments on my blog, so take some time to leave your thoughts and you can be guaranteed to hear back from me! Weekly Summary
