This American Life – Reap What You Sow – BS

What is the topic of the story(s)?

The overall podcast is basically about getting what you deserve, hence the title of the podcast, “Reap What You Sow”. In Act one, the story is about illegal immigrants. The second Act is a story about a guy who brings two chickens into his Brooklyn neighborhood and the consequences that go along with that.

What made you laugh?

Before the first Act, hearing about how he would drop some extra snow in the driveways of people he didn’t like or didn’t pay him made me laugh quite a bit. That is something I could definitely see myself doing. The comedian in the second Act wasn’t all that funny but he had a couple good moments. The only thing he did that made me laugh though was the way he said a few things.

What surprised you?

I don’t know if this really surprised me but just the idea of “self deportation” strikes me in a rough way. They said that it is like, “making every interaction a small checkpoint” and those that hire or even just help an illegal immigrant would get in trouble. Do I personally think it’s right that we have so many illegal immigrants? Do I think we should do something about it? Yes I do think something should be done about it, but at the same time, these are people that are trying to live a better life. We as Americans are so “spoiled”. We don’t realize how good we have it here.

Their goal with this “self deportation” is to make life so difficult that the illegal immigrants will choose to leave. As a human being though, when I hear a mother say that she says a prayer every morning before she drives to work so she won’t get stopped and deported or that she has appointed an American citizen as legal guardian of her child so, if she does get deported, her child will be safe and not go to foster care, makes me a little sick. I’m not a parent and I can only imagine how that would feel to do both of those things. I can only imagine the feeling of having your child with you not be safe for them. That sort of thing doesn’t make sense to me but for them, it is a harsh reality.

Describe the non-dialog elements used, such as sound effects, dramatic music, etc. How did these add or detract to the story being told?

Some of the music was just kind of filler it seemed but some of it really pulled at you when something sad was mentioned or when they really wanted you to think.
