Blue Light of Japan Railway

Have you ever seen these blue LED lights around the platforms and wondered what that is?  I just took this photo of Yamanote line in Shinjuku station.

Hum…Obviously, it’s not advertisement… Is it insect killing light? No, it is just LED without electric web … is it a signal for the train driver?  No, it is set toward the waiting passengers, not the track…

According to a TV show called “Urban Legend” the lite is set up for preventing suicide. Perhaps, person who wants to jump off the platform would feel better after seeing blue or green objects. Statistically, the suicide rate went down after setting those blue LED light bulbs.
