Today April 11th 2012 at 4 pm was my English honor society induction. Â Not going to lie, but I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. I initially thought to myself, big whoop, I am in English honor society. Â However, after the ceremony I have to admit I am very proud of myself and all of my fellow peers who have been inducted. Â We have worked so, so hard. Â We have worked until our breaking points. Â Especially this last year, I have never had so much school work to do in my life.
I love when people tell me that being an English major isn’t hard. Â ”It’s an easy subject.” Â Oh, really? Â Reading theories, attempting to keep up with novels from classics to YA is easy? Â Learning how to keep up with technology is easy? Â Learning how to teach and reach students that have different backgrounds is easy? Â I beg to differ. Â If anything, I believe we have one of the hardest majors. Â Literacy is changing. Â It is not just print anymore. Â I have to learn how to be literate across the board because according to theorists, everything is a text and can be read. Â I’d love to see those who find my future job easy do it because I am sure they would take back what they said very quickly.
What I just went into a rant about reminds me of Taylor Mali’s slam poem, “What Teachers Make.” Â Watch here- I am sure he would agree with what I said above!
Doing well is and always has been very important to me. Â I believe I am too hard on myself at times, but whatever I am doing is working I guess. Â So, everyone, do well in school!
