Don’t Mess with Magic!***

Magic is some pretty serious stuff. I mean just imagine the responsibility of having magic, what qualifies as something that needs it, who would you use it on, how would it change you? All of that power can really go to someone’s head and it can either make you evil or good, we see it all the time. Look at the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella against the Evil Queen from Snow White; both use magic one for good and one for evil. The same goes for Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West.

One of the first times that I put a lot of thought into this concept was just this past year when watching a TV Series on ABC called Once Upon a Time. If you have never seen it, I suggest you watch it because it gives great imagination and depth to fairy tale characters and has tons of action as well! Between catching up on this show from the past few weeks to seeing this three star design assignment, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

The assignment calls for designing a warning label for something that is seen in the movies or in someone’s imagination. Well I believe that everyone hopes for a little bit of magic in their lives, and magic certainly is popular in the movies that I watch. However, Once Upon a Time has this phrase that comes up a few times throughout the series that says “All magic comes with a price” which is something that completely fits with the whole series and I think that it is such an interesting outlook on magic. In fact, magic always came with a price for the good guys too, I mean afterall Cinderella had to be back by midnight.

So here was the design I came up with,

untitled

I found the image of the magic wand online and it had no color to it, which means tons of opportunity for me to manipulate them :) . I copied and pasted some of the stars from the wand and put them in the corner, in order to keep the piece a bit more balanced and more appealing to the eye. I then added two separate text boxes and looked for a font that seemed like a warning label. However, since I decided to use those colors and I wanted to have red in my picture somehow, to capture the attention of the audience. So, I decided to fill in the stars to be red so that it would stand out more to the people, just like warning symbols typically are.  I created all of this in Paint since I was in a computer lab and did not have access to GIMP, but I think it treated me just fine.

Thanks for reading, and remember all magic comes with a price!
