What does it mean to work digitally? When one thinks of working digitally, they typically think of things dealing just specifically dealing with technology. What if it isn’t about technology but about say… fashion or art or dating. For Tavi Gevinson she found a way to utilize technology as a form of self- expression as well as providing a site for others that seek something different from the rest of the internet.

Gevinson has been blogging since the age of 13 on her own style with her blog “Style Rookie”. Soon she began to attract attention from fashion designers and celebrities and began to show up at the front row of fashion shows. In September of 2011, Gevinson launched Rookie Magazine, an online teenage magazine that features articles and art based on a monthly theme. Stories and art are submitted by Rookie’s staff and readers of Rookie. Five days a week, there are three things that Rookie posts and now they post two things on the weekends. In the first month, Rookie had over 1 million views within the 5 days of first being online. I had discovered this site last September when I stumbled across a twitter feed and I have been a fan of it since.

Before Rookie came along, there was not a whole lot of websites or magazines that truly gave a different perceptive of what it meant to be a teenager. I think the way Gevinson has been able to reach out to so many people that range far from the targeted teenage girl audience is amazing. As a college student that is older than her, I go on that site just about everyday. I still find the things on Rookie to be very relevant and honest, more so than the things I was exposed to when I was younger. To be able to use technology that is provides a space for teenage girls to breath where the rest of the internet can be cruel and harsh is just simply great.

I want to have my topic be about Rookie Magazine and how they have been able to create a site that empowers young women (well… all kinds of people) with working digitally to do so. The next 6 videos that I have on this blog are either about Rookie or are from Rookie.
