    Ready, Set, Blog

    by
In yesterday’s class we made great progress with getting their blogs set up. I’m pleased to see the ones that have already been made their own with different themes.. Now it’s time to fill them up! In the class session … Continue reading

    Amplify Your Being

    by
I watched the “Bags of Gold” video for the first time about six months ago, and it was one of the first things that really sold me on DS106. I remember not understanding parts of it—the allusions, the web 1.0/2.0 distinctions, the blackboard forum dissection—but I remember thinking that Campbell seemed like a zealot ...

    My Take on #DS106

    by
I recently tried to present something on #ds106 and MOOCs in general at VSTE. It’s probably best it wasn’t filmed. I’m going to try to present something more coherent in writing.1 This will be a description of what made this course work for me although I believe it could be generalized at least some to ...

The Jim Groom Post Keynote Recap

    by
cc licensed ( BY NC SD ) flickr photo shared by giulia.forsythe As one of the converted, its hard not to be electrified after Jim’s keynote at Open Ed 2011– I can only guess what the energy was like in Park City. I was fortunate to be listening in with Gardner Campbell from his office here at Virginia Tech And he was sure smiling a lot given Jim’s (well deserved) mentions Gardner’s way for his “No Digital Facelifts” talk, or as we ds106ers know it, the Bag of Gold talk (which was ironically or not so, at Open Ed 2009 in Vancouver). Check out the animated GIF representation ;-) As we walked to lunch in Blacksburg (that was at Chipotle’s, Jim!) I recorded a quick audio recap with Gardner reflecting on the talk. Recap of Jim Groom’s Talk with Gardner Campbell We love ya, Groom. We all do. We are ...

    Digital Facelifts and Understanding Media

    by
I’ve already ranted about Gardner Campbell’s talk, “No More Digital Facelifts,” once before.  However, I didn’t really touch on the importance of understanding the context in which you use the medium. A big reason why newspapers have had a difficult time migrating to online formats is not just because it’s a “digital facelift,” but because ...

I had seen a snippet of Gardner prior to this class.   He did a presentation at UMW and I found even then I was enraptured by the ideas he talked about. Today though, I want a goddamn bag of gold. One thing that made a big impact on me was his statement about the ...

    Metaeducation

    by
Today’s videos were very much about using digital technology to assist in the education of this upcoming generation (and subsequents) – and by “assist in” I mean “drive”; and by “education” I don’t mean the job training that lots of kids come to college for, but actual, no-shit betterment. That is to say, these guys, ...

I Want to be a Retronaut

    by
A bad link click turns up some stuff from that Bag of Gold- the link was in the twitter river, for something I forget, and ot was not found on the site, but the site itself caught my interest– http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/, where the subtitle is “Ever get the feeling you’re living in the wrong time?”. It is a collection of images and videos that are geared to tap into an older era that links to the current one, yes, there is a faint odor of Steampunk, but its more than gadgets. The technology section is full of mocks of older advertisements and movies, amde out to use current tools– such as an iPod from 1977, and this video clip from 2001 A Space Odyssey where the astronauts are using iPads: In the History WTF section are color photos from inside the Hindenburg. There is a mile long scrolling infographic on the ...

ds106 Means Never Having to Say You’re Sorry

    by
cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by Half Chinese It’s been illuminating scanning the posts the UMW ds106 students are writing in their “advice to future ds06ers” assignment. Most acknowledge the incredible amount of work and time the class took, and then counter with something along the lines “it was so worth it.” I’m not sure what they put in the water on campus in Fredericksburg, but they have a lot of intense, motivated students, the kind in other places teachers might hope to have just a hand full in class. And here is something else I don’t think Jim and Martha have written about, but Jim as relayed to me- no (or almost no) students have dropped out of the 3 sections. Is that remarkable to anyone else? I know from my years in the community college system, you could just count on having half, one third ...

    DS106Radio Memory Lane

    by
This is your brain on DS106Radio: Actually, the image was requisitioned by Dr.Rutherford and Dr.Figg for their upcoming teacher education presentation. They wanted an image to represent the 21st century teacher. I figure a 21st century teacher is focused on … Continue reading

Beneath – now with (some) interactivity

    by
Here is another update to Beneath. My focus since last time has been figuring out how to allow the player to interact with their environment in ways beyond merely walking about. Here are a few changes you may notice… Most obvious is that there now a new starting area – a mysterious forest. Within it ...

    Beneath – now with stuff

    by
There have been a number of changes to the game since my last update. Perhaps the most immediately useful is that it now has a working name – “Beneath.” So now you can call it that instead of “Galagonwagon’s game project thing.” Check out a demonstration of the new stuff (click below, and use the ...

    Stir Up ds106: Thursday Tweetathon

My Problem With ds106 Radio (Sorry Jim)

    by
For the past week, it seems like 90% of the tweets in the #ds106 feed are about ds106 radio. It seems that everyone who is tweeting regularly is in love with the radio station. I, too, like it and think it is an awesome, unprecedented (for me) addition to a class. I scoff at my ...

This weeks assignment was to read “Web 2.0 Storytelling: The Emergence of a New Genre” and Seven Things You Should Know about Creative Commons. The Web 2.0 article attempted to define and describe what digital storytelling is. After reading it, I don’t feel that I learned anything I didn’t already know.  The 50+ ways article was probably the only ...
