“Creativity isnt magic, it happens by applying ordinary into extraordinary materials, listening to this was very interesting and an eye opener. For some reason I grew up thinking that copying was a bad thing but according to this piece, we all copy ie Richard Pryor the comedian became famous by copying Bill Cosby, somehow, I used to think that you have to be born creative. I believed that I couldn’t be any creative than I am because I was not born with it, Using examples of famous people who copied the original works of other, modified it, made changes and claimed it as their own( Christopher Latham, Thomas Edison) was very comforting as well. Failure comes with copying, learning or trying to invent something new, Thomas Edison tried 6000 times before being able to invent the first commercially viable light bulb. The most dramatic effects can happen by combining ideas says this piece, by connecting ideas together, creative leaps can be made and new inventions will come about as a result of this. Copy, transform and combine; the basic elements of creativity.Isn’t that what ds 106 is all about? Today, we have different forms of computers based on the originality with which Xerox and Apple created some of the first computers in the 1980′s. Apple copied various stuffs from Xerox to create the Macintosh and it exploded. Today, we are all enjoying the explosive benefits of the power of combination, laptops, 4G smart phones, desktops, Ipods, Ipads are all a combination of different ideas and orignal inventions of other people. I see why this piece is titled “everything is a remix”. Songs are remixed by drawing inspiration from the original lyrics of the songs, from 3G phones came the new 4G phones, ipods and then ipads? Name it and it has been remixed. I watch commercials on TV and I always hear advertisers say ” this is the new and improved Colgate toothbrush, arm and hammer laundry detergent, skin care products, baby foods, prescription medications and what have you. I wonder if all this new improvements would have been possible had manufactures not remixed new products based on the originality of old ones. The concept of multiple discovery was an interesting one as well, science, art, and the movie industry are all constantly remixing to improve on the new inventions. For one thing, I have let my guard done after watching this video, now, I know that I could take the original works of others, gather ideas from it, transform it into something entirely different and employ my creative skills to make it entirely my own, hey Thomas Ford, Christopher Latham, and Apple did it and their names are forever engraved in the book of history. Why can’t I? Interesting piece. I cant wait for Part 4 in the fall.
