    Social Networks

    by
What is social network? If I ask so, many people would think of facebook, twitter, or mixi. Social network basically is defined as the communication service that helps people to communicate each other through the internet. Actually, I am a facebook user and enjoying my friend’s posting and photos. Let me focus on facebook and explain its history briefly.

According to “The History of the Internet a Nutshell,” facebook was launched in 2004 mainly by Mark Elliot Zuckerberg. At the first time it was targeting to college students, and then it was opened to the public in 2006. Facebook has more than 750 million active users now.

Then, let’s focus how facebook is different from other social networks.

First, how facebook is different from twitter? For instance, although facebook users become “friend” with each other’s permission, in twitter people can connect other users one-sidedly. It means that we can follow other’s twittering without permission. Therefore, users would connect to even a passer-by if the person twitters interesting information for him. This characteristic suggests that twitter fits to provide information rather than communicating. How about mixi and facebook? Facebook and mixi have many similarities, yet one of big differences between them could be that facebook requests its users to use their real names. The system with real names enables its users to bring their real community to social network as it is. Therefore, the services provided by facebook are more realted to user’s daily life than that of mixi. I do not mean that real name system is superior to the anonymous one.  However, it is clear that  facebook meets needs of many people in term of communicating ;therefore, it has been able to succeed as one distinguished social network.

I put one link about the conflict about the right to remain anonymous on the internet in Japan.
This article provides you an opportunity to think about privacy on the internet.

    Internet and people

    by
This story is a little off the topic of The History of the Internet, but I was impressed and appreciated the internet service.
In 2000, my mom got breast cancer. The cancer itself was not heavy, and so she is fine now. However, as other patients suffered by breast cancer, she had to cut her left breast off.
For women loosing breasts is so painful because they might feel like they are not female anymore, and my mom wasn't an exception. Because of a secondary effect of an anticancer drug, the whole illness produced depressed state.
My dad, brother and I all tried to chin her up all the time, but everything ran badly. We wanted to help her, but we couldn't imagine her real feelings. She stayed indoors at bedroom; what she did was crying and sleeping.
She had a PC in her room. I don't know why and when she started to look internet sites, but she actually did. I guess she wanted to know more about breast cancer at first. And then, she found many other patients of breast cancer. She created her own blog, and made web-friends...a woman who just found her breast cancer, a man whose wife was suffered by breast cancer, and so on.
One day, she asked my dad whether she could go out of home (we need dad's permission if we want to go somewhere). She said she wanted to go to hot spring in Akagi, Gumma. I was surprised because we had to be naked in ONSEN, and it must hard for people who lost breast.
What made her go out of her room was "1, 2の3で温泉に入る会" (Getting in Onsen with 1, 2, 3 shout). This is Japanese site, but this organization is established by, and for "breast cancer survivors".
Her depression was getting better and better by communicating with people who had the same worries or anxiety. Mom's blog had 10th anniversary this year. Unfortunatelly one of the web-friends passed away by metastasis of breast cancer to uterus. However, mom is trying to learn more about breast cancer, and supporting other patients through the web.

    Visiable Links…(WB#1)

    by
Ted Nelson, a pioneer of information technology, is best known as the "father of Hypertext". He was one of people inspired by Vannevar Bush. Bush introduces a new technical macine called "memex" in his essay "As We May Think". Later,  Nelson created similar macine named "Hypertext"which was to enhance human memory by allowing the user to store and retrieve documents linked by associations based on Bush's hypothetical.

Nelson also created CosmicBook which shows visiable links go over windows in 2004. Basically, all information are not visiable and concluded  within a windows, so cosmicbook was unusual program.

Almost of all information in the internet are linked each other. If every link become vidiable, how many links could we find on a computar's screen? It is no doubt that it will be inpossible to count them but interesting to know how things are related with the visiable links.

Facebook is the one of most famous SNS in the world, and quite many people have their own facebook across countries. On the facebook, you can find your friends without searching friends yourself because facebook suggests people who might know you based on mutual friends, school, activities and social communities. It will be interesting and much easier to know the connections by using CosmicBook through the visiable links. Meanwhile, it scares me because people finally might lose their privacy.  In addition, SNS including facebook has become a tool for many kinds of actions for terrorisms. So now, it is time to discuss how to develop and use high technologies in our lives.
