Last Radio Show Ever

I don’t remember the first song I ever played on WMWC. I’d like to think it was something by the Kaiser Chiefs, but I really don’t know. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that the radio station had a blog and so it wasn’t until then that I have any kind of record of what I played on my various radio shows. But without even looking at all those entries (which peter out after my junior year) and without knowing exactly what all I played for that first year I do know one thing: I played a hell of a lot of music over the last three and a half years. I played somewhere between 15 and 30 songs almost every week for the seven semesters I was here. Without doing the hard computation (or actually figuring out how many weeks there are in every semester) I would guess I played well over a hundred songs. Possibly over 500 hundred. And yes, a lot of those were repeats and there were weeks when I didn’t have a show as well as that whole semester I wasn’t here. Still, I played a lot of music. So how do I summarize three and a half years of music in 45 minutes?
One solution I came up with was the mash-up I created using songs I know I’d played in the past. If I had just played those songs, unmashed, they would have created their own show. My other major goal in programming for my last show was to include as many of the “big hit” artists I played over the last three and a half years.* Choosing those artists was difficult, but there were some fairly obvious answers (Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, Mika, The Wombats, Kate Nash, et al.) and some slightly less likely answers (Miike Snow). There are artists I wish I’d had time to include (Rilo Kiley) and one artist I thought I’d have to time to play but had to cut out (Franz Ferdinand, which made me sad.) If I had infinite time I would have played more, and possibly have talked less, but all in all I think my last radio show did a good job summing up everything I’ve done over the last three and a half years: Snarky commentary paired with really good music.
Playlist

  1. Kaiser Chiefs – You Want History
  2. Kate Nash – Do-Wah-Doo
  3. The Kinks – David Watts
  4. Lily Allen – Fuck You
  5. Mika – Dr. John
  6. OK Go – What To Do
  7. Keane – Perfect Symmetry
  8. Miike Snow – Animal
  9. Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves
  10. El Mashup** – Various Artists
  11. Supertramp – Goodbye Stranger

*And if I keep saying three and a half years, eventually I’ll remember to actually type the “a” in that phrase.
**1) Franz Ferdinand’s “Can’t Stop Feeling” was meant to come before El Mashup, but because of time I cut it out and 2) for a full list of songs see this entry.
