What is Teaching or an Instructor? A call to arms! A response to education videos.

All,
I have been spending some time thinking about the videos and essays we have read.  Here are some more thoughts.   Ironically this is a topic I am very passionate about.

According to the google define: feature:

Teaching- The occupation, profession, or work of a teacher (instructor)
Instructor- A person who teaches something

I thought this was interesting.  Definitions that use each other to point back to each other.  Oh infinite loops.

Instruction (or modern day teaching) is not allowing students to learn.  Modern forms of educating are not working.  Educating is engaging and helps students learn.  Education is not from staring at a person talk.  Education is from doing.  Fortunately my professors in the UMW CPSC department are actually educators not instructors.  I have seen other students from my own university and other universities who have had instructors.  I feel bad.  They have no idea what to do.  They haven’t had guidance.  They don’t really know anything about what actually is done in their field of study.  They come out of college without a job.  I can only talk from personal experience.  A real educator gets involved with every student.  They want to know what makes them tick.  They help when there is trouble but they don’t give the answer after frustration.  Real educators have experience to share.  If there are any instructors reading this by chance I challenge you to stop instructing (or teaching) and start educating.  This is a call to arms to start preparing your students for life and stop taking up space and time.  Make my remaining time and future students time worth while.  Give them what they pay for.

Reagards,

Joe Fehrman
