I have finished my 1st assignment in DS106, and have officially created my first webpage and blog! If you are reading this, you are seeing my blog. If you do not have a ton of experience doing stuff like this, like myself, you should read how I did it. I followed the instructions that my professor, Jim Groom (and maybe created with Alan Levine?), left here.
Step 1: I set up an account with Hover.com and with Bluehost.com. I chose these sites because they were fairly inexpensive (Hover = $`15/year and Bluehost = about $6/month, and I wanted it for a year so that I could use it as a resume after the class was done). So, I set up my accounts, and my domain name that I created at Hover was chelseamageland.com
Step 2: I needed to point the domain (Hover) to the webhost (Bluehost), and that was actually pretty easy, it just didn’t seem easy because it didn’t happen instantaneously, as my webpage didn’t change after I linked the two. So I went onto Hover, I clicked edit, next to Nameserver, and I typed in ns1.bluehost.com for Nameserver 1 and ns2.bluehost.com for Nameserver 2.
So, after that connected (I believe I started this at around 6:00 p.m. the first day of class, and found that the next morning the two were connected, giving me chelseamageland.com. Hurray! Step one complete.
So, I had to make the blog portion, which required me to create a subdomain. I went back to the bluehost website, scrolled down to Domains, and double clicked the icon Subdomains.
In the subdomains section, it looks like this:
I typed in blog in both of the boxes. That’s how I got blog.chelseamageland.com.
I then had to make this a WordPress blog, so I had to download WordPress. I went to the WordPress icon, on cPanel, and it allowed me to install onto blog.chelseamageland.com.
And that’s how it went.
