Video Assignment – 5 second Archetype.

The assignment was to “Create a five second video of one archetype from five different movies cutting together one second of each.”  I would like to start off by saying that capturing 5 different examples of an archetype in 5 seconds was almost impossible.  In fact, at first it was impossible.  The first video is an 18 second clip that shows the character engaging some sort of behavior that identifies them as a womanizer in the particular show/movie.   I chose womanizers, as they appear frequently in movies and television shows, and because their characters tend to be very entertaining.  AND YES, more Ryan Gosling.

The characters that I have chosen:

Alex Karev – played by Justin Chambers in Grey’s Anatomy

Jeremy Grey – played by Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers

Jacob Palmer – played by Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love

Barney Stinson – played by Neil Patrick Harris in How I Met Your Mother

Daniel Cleaver – played by Hugh Grant in The Diary of Bridget Jones

I used Lily Allen’s version of “Womanizer” in the background.

After looking at the scenes that I downloaded from youtube, I shortened it to the length of the assignment – a womping 5 seconds.  I didn’t think it would have the same affect, because you can’t see what the guys are doing, but I think after making it, you can kind of tell by the way they hold themselves, if they speak, and even their facial expressions.  I don’t know if someone could guess “womanizer” though, unless they had scene the original video I pulled it from, or were familiar with the character.  Here is the 5 second clip:

Overall, I found that it was a bit challenging to find good small clips that depicted an archetype.  I am glad that I have access to iMovie, as it made clipping everything very easy.  It’s only getting easier (knock on wood).

Assignment worth 3 stars.
