The Shapes of Stories [Breaking Bad]

Okay guys, it’s BREAKING BAD time!!!

Before I start, I just want to say that this is my absolutely FAVORITE show of all time.  Here is a YouTube clip of the Breaking Bad trailer that someone made, just so you can get an idea of the show.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly suggest you give it a watch and check it out.  Actually, here is the first episode that someone put up on YouTube!  I wouldn’t suggest watching this with your kids.  It’s got cuss words and I believe nudity in the first episode so definitely watch this on your own time (with headphones on and not at work).  If I need to take this down please let me know.  Otherwise, I’d like to keep it up for people to watch it if they haven’t seen it.

Okay, now that I’m done advocating for the show, let’s get into the Shape of the Story.

In terms of the tempo of the show, this is pretty much it…

From IMDB.com, “Informed he has terminal cancer, an underachieving chemistry genius turned high school teacher uses his expertise to secretly provide for his family by producing the world’s highest quality crystal meth.”  Labeled as Crime/Drama/Thriller, this show is definitely the most amazing one that I’ve seen..period.  To those of you who don’t particularly like this show, I’m just voicing my (strong) opinion here on how amazing it is to me.

As cheerful as those two gifs may seem, this show is absolutely one of the darkest ones that I’ve seen before. In terms of Kurt Vonnegut and The Shapes of Stories, this one starts out, and stays, for the most part, below the happy line.  I would say that a good percentage, maybe 85% of the show, is in the sad area.  The only reason for that is the show is about, as I stated earlier, a science teacher with lung cancer who cooks meth to provide for his family.  I wouldn’t say that the show, based on that synopsis, is very ‘chipper’ to be honest.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of humor to the show, but it’s just very dark.  There really isn’t any other way to explain the show to be honest.  I would, if you haven’t seen it, watch the first episode.  If you are willing to try out something new, you won’t go wrong with this one.  It’s currently rated at the 4th best TV series on IMDB with a current rating of 9.4/10.

In my opinion, Breaking Bad is amazing because of the cinematography, the really tight and dramatic storytelling, and the characters.  Walter White’s descent into criminality is why I would say it stays in below the happy line in regard to the Shapes of Stories.  The fact that there is a villainous protagonist who you actually sympathize with is just genius.  There isn’t a better show on TV right now to me.  It’s hard to describe this show in regard to Shapes without spoiling too much of it.  I believe that I’ve done a pretty good job of explaining the shape of the show though without giving too much away.

Thanks for checking out this post!  I hope that you enjoyed it.  If you haven’t seen the show, go watch it!  I’ve made it too convenient for you to not at least watch a couple minutes of the first episode.
