Storytelling

To me, the word story telling is associated with passing on information from one person to another. This could be fact or fiction, informative or gossip; any type of information. It is to help the person listening understand or learn about something they previously did not understand or know. Storytelling is present in all peoples’ everyday lives.

To be honest, when someone says the word “storytelling” the image comes to mind of cavemen sitting around a fire, grunting and drawing about their lives and those before them. This may be because it was the only way to pass on information so it was the core of cavemens’ lives. There were no books or computers or internet, and their only form of entertainment was storytelling between each other.

When the word digital is added to storytelling, I honestly picture blogs on the internet where people post information about themselves and others and important things going on in their lives. Digital storytelling is different because it allows all people from various places to access the “stories” or information someone has put online or in the media. It seems to be a much easier, more convenient way to share, rather than solely having to be in the same place as another person. Digital storytelling allows for information to travel faster and to be fair, more accurately. I say accurately because if a story starts with Katie, and then Katie tells Christa, and Christa tells Michael, everyone is going to have specific things they remember, things they don’t and will slightly change the story when retelling it to others.
