Video Assignment #2 – Make a Tutorial For Your Mom – 5 Stars

For my second Video Assignment, I’m choosing to Make A Tutorial For My Mom.  This proved to be extremely helpful because I am actually able to show my mom this and give this to her.  She always has trouble with making sense of her computer, so I thought that this assignment was right up her alley.  I might even make a couple more for her in the future because she will definitely find this to be extremely beneficial.  When she she’s this, she won’t ever have to call me about the problem again.  So, while this assignment is viewed as an assignment for class, it’s really a life assignment that I can give to my mom as well.  Thank you.

The description: “Make a short tutorial showing someone who is not very familiar with computers or asks you to do something for them all the time because they don’t know how.”

The (rather long) example didn’t really give me much inspiration. All I needed to see was the title and I knew exactly what I was going to do and how I was going to do it.

This is the first time that I actually messed around with recording my screen and making a tutorial.  I did a little bit of research as to how I would make this happen and I didn’t know that QuickTime actually has a ‘record screen/audio’ function built in to it.  I didn’t even need to download anything which was amazing.  I just fired up QuickTime, pressed record, and off I went!

What I chose to do was to help my mom download attachments from Gmail.  With the ‘conversation’ view style selected, she has a difficult time trying to find attachments in emails.  I always have to either go into her email for her or try to walk her through a way to download the attachment.  Thankfully, I’ll never have to do that again!  With this tutorial, I’m just going to send it to her in an email (or maybe have her write it down).  Whenever she forgets, she can go back and watch this video and know exactly what to do.

Thankfully, I didn’t even need to use FCPX to do any editing.  It was all ready to go and I just uploaded it straight from my computer to YouTube.  QuickTime allowed me to save it in a YouTube friendly format and it is ready to go!  Since I’ll be done with school soon and moving away, I’ll definitely have to make a bunch of different tutorials for my mom to have since I won’t be as close to her for much longer.

I hope you guys enjoy my video!  There isn’t much to it in terms of editing, but the ability to have a screenshot recording and have audio as well is pretty amazing.
