Audio, music, and guitar (as mid-term post)

Audio, needless to say, is the one of the most famous element of music. I will focus on guitars because I'm a guitarist. First of all, when I was 12 years old, I was not interested in music at all. But the friend of my father gave me a chance to listen the sounds of electric guitar directly. He played "eruption" of Van Halen. I found that one guy posted about Van Halen on his blog. This song was almost all composed by only a guitar. (and drums are only at intro.) That was amazing experience for me. That was only a guitar! "What a loud and cool sounds!" I felt. Listen and watch that song.

I did not know at that time, but this guitarist, Edward Van Halen, did really advanced performance on this song. A guitar was invented as acoustic guitar at first, and it was made by wood and steel. A electric guitar is, too. Almost all the materials are same, but their sounds are very different. Maybe the time when electric guitars were invented, they would be advanced sounds at that time. But, Edward did advanced by his own techniques, his own fixed guitar, and amps. The important thing was his technique. Other guitarists improved and fixed their instruments at that time, but his technique was the only one. For example, he invented the skill called "tapping". Nowthetime, every guitarists know tapping, and this is essential technique of hard rock music. This skill is widely taught by many guitarists.

Music is a harvest of audio, but it depends on not only audio but also human technique. I used to have same guitar, but I can't play his sounds perfectly. We guitarists all cannot play like him. This blog posted his interview. In this blog, the interviewer asked “Who are you?”, and the one replied  “Edward Van Halen.” This was his early days and he was just a man. 33 years have passed since this interview, but he has been my guitar hero. Every time I heard "music," "guitar," and "audio," I always remember him. I hope to see his live in Japan.

    Midterm Exam: Practical Activity

In this Blog I will be talking about mashup of videos, specifically videos/sounds of greatest American movie insults and line.

In 2005 June 21st American Film Institute ran a three-hour special on CBS about the top 100 quotations in American Cinema. AFI's 100 years...Series started in 1998 with the Top 100 movies and every year they had a special on 100 something. Just to name a few of them are: 100 passions, 100 song, 100 heroes and villains. But for this blog we will only talk bout the 100 Movie Quotes.

This is the short video of what AFI's 100 years...Series used

Who picked and voted for this top 100 Famous Movie Quotes? Well the jury consisted of 1500 film artist, critics, and historians. These people voted on any movie that was made in America. The winner in this contest is Actor Clark Gable plating in Gone with the Wind, and the quotation went like this "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." The other 99 are equally great lines that will be remembered through out history and will be classic quotes for a very long time.

Now there are hundreds of videos on youtube that is a compilations and mashup of movie quotes that the creator of the video think is the best lines of all time. These are personal opinions and are hand selected by the video maker but they are still entertaining and awesome to watch.

This one is my personal favorite of all the 100 movie quote montages

This is the ring that Sméagol from Lord of the Rings called "Precious!". Which is one of my all time favourite line of all time.

These are link to people who did mash up. Mash ups do not only end at movie quotes. They mix of anything and any number of things. That is what makes it so fun and entertaining.

    Midterm–Mashup (MovieTrailer)

    by
Although I am majoring in Art, I am NOT what people call 'artist'. I decided to major in art just because I want to learn how to draw or design. In addition, I am not a computer-person, so I have no idea how to edit pictures digitally.
So here, I have decided to chose ds106 assignment that is totally not in my medium of art.

I decided to concentrate on the category of Mashup, and dig in even more, by focusing on this one assignment -- Movie Trailer Mashup.

Here, you are to take your favourite movie trailer, and mix them with another trailer that has a totally different theme. For example, take the video from a horror movie trailer, and mix it with the audio from a comedy movie (if that makes any sense).

This might be hard, as you have to find good trailers that would match. Only thinking about one of the trailers would not make the whole outcome successful. Just like mixing your voice with audio, matching is the hardest, and the most important part of this process.

    Mixing Desk

Here is one sample made by mixing video from "Toy Story 3" and audio from "Inception".

It's pretty interesting if you know both movies.
In addition, the combination with the seriousness of 'Inception' and the so-called-childishness of 'Toy Story 3' is interesting as well.
I feel that this is one of the fun parts of this assignment, and as I have mentioned before,
the mixing part and how the video and the audio match is very important part.

Here are some more examples of movie trailer mashups. (audio ; video)
    Elf ; 300
      - "300" is war movie, and "Elf" is a comedy movie. The gap between the dialogue and the person speaking is matching really well. Also, I really like the movie "Elf", so I personally enjoyed watching this video a lot.

The Ring 2 ; The Runaway Bride
      - "The Ring 2" is a famous horror movie, and "The Runaway Bride" is a romace comedy movie. I have never watched both movies, but it was still very interesting to watch. Since I had no clue what "The Runaway Bride" was about, without being notified about this assignment, I would have thought that this movie is scary.

Strictly Ballroom ; Saturday night Fever
      - "Strictly Ballroom" is a comedy movie, and "Saturday Night Fever" is I believe... comedy too? (looked for it, but is still not sure). The two movies are both about dancing and music, so I think it was easier to match.

Looking through the blogs, there seems to be a lot of ways you can edit the videos and mix them together. However, all of them look unfamiliar, and hard for me. I think I would only use Windows Movie Maker and see how it turns out.

This assignment looks interesting, just by looking through the videos that are uploaded on YouTube. I feel they take a lot of ideas and technique, but anyone can do them. I recommend people to do this assignment because it looks, and it is  actually interesting.

...and, just because I want to see a lot of these videos. haha.
