Fans And Social Media- The Dark Side

Posted by

At the first sight, there doesn’t seem to be any connection between fans of popular groups, idols, stars and social media,

but been given this topic to our group for presentation,
with some research,
we have actually found out a lot of things about how fans and social media relate to each other and interact.
And this kind of “relationship” is not always positive.

The good example for that is the extremely popular nowadays Japanese girlie pop-band  AKB48.

There are only two ways to react to this “phenomena”:
                      love it or hate it.

So it’s no wonder there are a lot of fans who are literally obsessed with this band
and influence Social Media in terms of AKB48 popularity to make it more and more famous.

What is AKB48?
AKB48 is an idol pop-group created by Yasushi Akimoto in December 2005 with the concept “Idols you can meet everyday”.
In May 2011 There were already 18 members on team A, 18 members on team B, 18 members on team K, 23 members on team Trainee which is in total 61 members.

Official site of AKB48: http://www.akb48.co.jp/english/index.html

Through our group research we have found some very controversial facts about it.
One of which is that AKB48 fans buy multiple copies of  AKB48 CDs in order to vote for them and that is one of the reasons why they are so popular.

A lot of Internet users, including AKB fans, spread rumors about AKB48 members.
The fans’ purpose for spreading rumors is to attack their favorite idols’ rivals which in turn would shift thier popularity onto thier own idol.
Its very easy to find many disgusting things about AKB48 on the internet.
For example, there are many rumors reagrding AKB48 members that they did cosmetic surgeries.
The Internet has helped AKB48 to be popular, yet ironically it also has helped to spread a negative impact.
Buying unofficial AKB48 products does not help the AKB48 members at all. In fact, the unofficial products can break their image down.

By using different forms of social Media, the fans can harm their lovely idols.
There are only few examples of how fans can influence Social Media.
There certainly can be found much more examples of negative influence of fans on Social  Media and that affects the artists as well, so it is a quite controversial topic.
