Alright, i’ve just read an interesting article on Creative commons, and i shall share my findings with whoever you are. I dont want to get too scientific about it, but heres the gist of what i got out of it: Apparently (because i did not know this) but when you copyright something, you take all of the rights to the given something. The article describes it as an “All or nothing proposition.” Creative commons is a new way, it seems, to allow people, business, etc. to still maintain most of the rights that a copyright would entitle, but still allow for sharing of some others.
It seems to me that creative commons is trying to create a “everyone wins” scenario. The article describes a situation in which MIT tried creative commons out, stating,”OpenCourseWare was launched to provide public, online access to the curricular materials from virtually all of MIT’s undergraduate and graduate courses.” I like the idea of everyone sharing knowledge and information, however, i cant help but think: “Whats to stop someone from getting a hold of one of these curricular materials or shared lesson plans and either, a. ripping them off and using it as a structure to make their own, or b. completely recycling the program, thereby using no creativity on their own part.?”
Again i do like the idea, im not much for optimism and i see people having problems with this but who knows, time will tell. It’ll be the Lawyers vs. the freethinkers
