I am an Elementary Education/ Collaborative teaching major. This major is a dual degree of grades K-6 dealing with children that have special needs. I have always wanted to be an education major because I had a special ability in dealing with children. I believe that if a child has the right person to make a positive impact on their lives then they will go far. When I graduate I want to go on to get my degree in speech pathology and also, my masters degree.
Special Education can be a wide variety of things such as gifted, learning disabilities, and children with special needs. I just don’t want to be any type of special needs teacher, I want to work with children that have autism spectrum disorders. In the spectrum of autism there are several different types of disorders; Autism, Asperger syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Rett’s Syndrome, and Persuasive Development Disorder. The main reason I want to get involved with this is because nephew was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, a mild form of Autism. Autism can range form mild symptoms such as, a child’s difficulty in interacting with others to problems with speech and communication.
It really bothered me when I was looking at the new a few weeks ago and a public school turned down a little boy because he had autism. Parents that have children with autism spectrum disorder often seek help from special doctors to deal with their child. I don’t think school systems think they can be turning down brilliant minds because, Einstein had Asperger syndrome. It would be my dream to open up a small center for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Even though parents want their children to be in the presence of other children I think that it would be great to attend a small place because, they require more attention.
