I Can Read Up

For my third design assignment I chose “I Can Read Movies.” For this assignment we had to create a book cover based off of a film using the examples found here. I decided to make a book cover based on the movie “Up.”

I started with a black background then added text and other design elements to make the image resemble Spacesick’s book covers. Similar to the “Minimalist TV/Movie Poster” assignment I decided to use minimalist iconography for this assignment. Once I decided I wanted to use Up for my cover I knew I wanted to incorporate balloons into my design. Initially I had a hard time finding an image I could use because they were no birthday balloons on any of the previously recommended sites. I finally found an image I liked on clker.com, a site which contains a variety of free public domain clip art. The balloon was originally red so I used a grayscale effect to alter the color. Additionally I removed the shadow that made the balloon appear three-dimensional. When I fished the cover I used iPhoto’s Antique Effect to make the picture look older.
