As I mentioned in my last post, I’m working with Linux from Scratch to get the base system up and running. So far it’s been proceeding very smoothly (better than I expected, given some of the difficulties I’ve seen people have with it), though I’ve been having to switch out hard drives on my laptop since I didn’t have a partition to spare on the other one. From there I’m looking at Beyond Linux From Scratch for various programming languages, X11, GnuPG, multimedia and various and sundry others. You’ll notice that they’re working with Firefox 3.6 (!), so first order of business is probably a package management system like Slackware’s, which doesn’t screw around with dependency checking (which is just the way I likes it, TYVM) so that I can do what Pat Volkerding does – SlackBuilds. Easy upgrades, with the ability to backpedal in case something breaks. LFS calls for using GRUB as a bootloader, but I’ll probably use LILO – again, since that’s what I’m used to. I’m also going to go with a BSD-style init, which is what I’m used to (because that’s how Slackware does it).
Basically, this means that anarchOS (which is what I’m calling it for right now), is going to be a Slackware-based distro (surprise!). While I was waiting for a compile, I was screwing around in the GIMP and came up with this:
Naturally, I’ll want to consult Mozilla about the use of their imagery if I actually release this distro (which, again, I’m not planning to do unless someone asks me for it), so before someone C&D’s me, just remember that I’m doing this for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. I’m educating myself. And really, who doesn’t think that’s awesome?
