What is Story Telling?

When I think of storytelling I immediately think of people sitting next to a camp fire with one person telling a ghost story.  I don’t know why that is the very first thing that comes to my mind but it does. I also think of story telling as in parents telling their kids a bed time story.  After thinking about the term storytelling more I think it is a person is telling can be about a real event that happened in their life or it can be something that is fiction that they’re making up.  I believe that reading a bedtime story is also storytelling because an author can write the story and have it published but the reader is the one who is interpreting how to tell the story to the listeners.  Storytelling to me can be defined in a lot of broad ways.  When someone is telling me a story (either if they’re reading it or just telling about an event that happened in their life) they ususally use certain expressions to describe how they feel or how they believe the character feels.  Usually if a person is listening to a story being told they’re quiet because they want to hear the story.  Storytelling can take place in may different settings, whether it is around a camp fire, or in a library or just at a restaurant, or even in your own home.  The word storytelling to me means that it is verbally spoken.

Now adding the word digital before the word storytelling changes my persepective.  When I think of digital storytelling I think of anything online.  Digital can be either a Youtube video of someone telling their story or it can also be a bunch of pictures together telling a story.  With digital storytelling there are a lot more options on expressing yourself.  I believe that the terms storytelling and digital storytelling are generally the same, but different as well.  As with storytelling digital storytelling is also just telling a story.  A story is a story either way but it is how the story is presented that maked the terms different.  Those are my thoughts on storytelling and digital storytelling.
