So…the first one I watched was disney used to explain copyright:
From this: I really like the idea that we are constantly building new ideas on old ones. Which makes it really hard to understand copyright. Confession: I’m pretty sure I violate copyright a lot. And as a history major, I let certain works of other historians inspire my own studies. I guess if we really sit back to think about it, we’re always toeing that line of copyright and plagiarism. Oh well, it’s more fun to live life on the edge, right?! Also, the remix of using Disney to explain copyright is fabulous. I have a lot of respect for the creator, mainly because I know how hard it is to edit a clip down to one word or phrase. But the concept came across pretty well: taking something old and making something new with it–it’s awesome!
The second, more boring looking reference (sorry, but it’s hard to top disney) was the Kirby Ferguson, Everything is a Remix video.
SO GOOD THAT IT STARTED OUT LIKE STAR WARS. Music does borrow from other artists all the time. I like that it spans all genres too! “Collecting material, combining it, transforming it”–> sums up what a remix is to me! I had no idea about William Burroughs, but that sounds like a good assignment idea (wink wink). Can you call people like Led Zeppelin ripoffs? I think yes because they just copied outright but at the same time, someone is not going to reproduce something the same exact way as another, it’s just next to impossible. Gosh-this is really hard to decide! And Zeppelin themselves get copied later so… yeah, not sure how to put this into words.
EXAMPLES:
Star Wars:
Ok, honestly, I have never seen any of the Star Wars movies but I love this! It is beyond awesome. I love the ways they included the background music of the actual song but it takes so many different scenes from the movies. I even like the inclusion of the non-English speaking characters (I don’t know what they’re called). It is definitely a good remix!
I found this mashup/remix myself:
It uses scenes from hocus pocus with mean girls dialogue [making it a mashup/remix] ! OMG THE BEST! I am so obsessed with it. The creator, or re-creator, uses scenes with the most perfect expressions. If you were lipreading it wouldn’t match up but it is way good if you are familiar with both the movies.
Weird Al:
Gosh this dude is a remix king! I remember listening to his remix ‘white and nerdy’ the used the music from ‘riding dirty’ but had completely different lyrics. haha, yes I’m flashing back to high school! Obviously, this one is a take on Bob Dylan, which is awesome. It actually reminds me of a completely different remix.
THIS ONE:
Ignore the horrible video quality and appreciate that Jimmy Fallon mashed up/ remixed David Bowie with Tim Tebow! He rewrote the lyrics of Space Oddity, Bowie’s iconic song. He’s dressed like Bowie except for the Broncos uniform part (that’s Tebow’s part).
Then I looked at Star Trek meets Monty Python:
I just love remixes! All of these make me feel like my creativity increased just from looking at them! This one proves that you don’t necessarily need the two or however many things you’re remixing to be related at all! In fact, all of them do! It’s so much funnier that way! I’m sure there are serious remixes but I love the humor embedded in all of these. (I’m an SNL fan, remember!)
