Since my vegetable garden was destroyed by deer last week, I started to search for information about deer repellent. I found a video from Youtube called Best Deer Repellent Ever Invented. It has 76,833 views since it was published at 2009. So I gave it a try.
What types of "involvement" – and by the author/creator(s), participant(s), Colorand/or audience – are apparent in this story?
I would say that participants’s involvement is pretty obvious in this video. There are three guys in the video introducing the deer repellent device, each of them taking turns to talk about the features of the device. Another example of participants involvement is the video maker put a footage of how the device scared deer away. The deer, the key characters got a place in this video to proof the effectiveness of the device. There are a list of social media icons available for the audience to click so the video will be twitted, Pinterested, linked to Facebook etc.
How would you characterize the “literacy dimensions” present in this story? Apparently, the participants knows what to say to appeals to others. They knew how to convey a lot of meaning in a limited amount of space or time. The author Knows how to edit digital video and photos and combine images, text, soundtrack and video clips together. voicetrack and video clips, etc.
What are the online spaces and sites that bring this story to life? Why do these spaces and sites matter to the impact of the given story? Well, I found this digital story through Google search which links to Youtube. It has lots of views and is listed on the first one on the roll to click when you search" best deer repellent". I think many people came to this site because they are having the trespassing issues at home and are looking for solutions online.
Based upon your assessment of involvement and literacy dimensions, what modifications and changes to this digital story might improve aspects of narrative, production, media usage, and/or audience engagement? Well, the video is only 3 minutes long but takes most of the video to get to the point. It is not so terrible that they try to make joke to make the video funny, but one of the jokes about battery acid is not appropriate. I hope they cut some of the jokes to make the video more poignant.
