Dear Future DS106 Student,
Why are you taking this class? If it’s because you think this 100 level course will be a light load then you’re in trouble. If it’s because you are actually interested in digital storytelling and willing to step out of the box, then you’re in the right place.
Jim Groom and your classmates will challenge you to be creative. Be prepared for not having a lot of notice or time to do assignments. But don’t worry sometimes the pressure of time produces your best work. Also don’t worry that this course is in the Computer Science department. Tutorials are provided for anything that is too computer sciencey. You will also get the opportunity to listen via skype to contributors in the digital storytelling field. Some of these are more interesting than others.
The following is some of what you can expect from this course:
Greater appreciation for website development
Skills in blogging and other forms of modern technological communication
Learn how to get a domain name and host your own website
Practice photography skills
Create mash-ups and a radio show
Learn about design tools
Be a DS106er 4 Life (as you will hear Jim Groom say)
The skills you learn from this course are especially beneficial if you’re going into journalism, education, or business. Good luck and have fun!
Alex
