    Valentines Alternative ds106

The assignment was to make a Valentines card
targeted toward a particular person (real or imaginary).

My first plan was to make a card with the word "ToGetHer".
just because it sounds really nice
and it was easy to memorize the spelling back in elementary school.

I used our good old friend, Paint.

I really like Paint, just because it is really simple and easy to use.
Although some people say it's one of those crappy software,
it's really useful once you really know how to use it.

    So.

At the top of the card, it says "Together Forever"
since it has to be targeted towards someone.

Staying together forever must be hard
unless you really love that person...
I envy some old grannies who looks happy together.

Then there's that symbol of heart.

Below that are two circular "stuff".
    They are stuck together
    forever
but they look happy because they love each other.

My first plan was to draw human boy and girl,
but I wanted to express in the simplest form as possible.
I thought of using stick figures too,
     but it became too simple.

    The bottom Japanese line says
    あいらびゅ。 "airabyu"
Short way of writing "I love you" in ro-maji.

I chose to write it in this way because
I thought that writing "I love you" is too formal.
Since the circular figures are not formal at all,
I wanted to express their looseness in this last line.

    (`=ω=´)ノ あいらびゅ。

    Google Translate Fail

    by
Just like a lot of poeple out there, I find google translate quite useless. It's good for translating single words sometimes or to get the gist of a sentence or text, but to translate something 100% correct is almost impossible. I started off translating a few words and sentences from Swedish to English that I would imagine to be difficult to translate. Those were words and sentences that you find in all languages but that cannot translate into another. Some languages simply have their own words for things based on what culture and traditions that country has. This culture or tradition might not exist in a another country and is therefore impossible to translate into that other language.

The sentence I have translated here are "denna rätt är lagom kryddad", which kind of means; this dish is well spiced. The word "lagom" is a word that only exist in Swedish. It means something that is in between too much and too little, in other words it's something that is middle-ground. Sweden is the country that is famous for always being in the middle. You should not make more money than anyone else, you should never do better than anyone else, never be louder, funnier etc. And if you are making more money, doing better, being louder, being funnier, God forbid that you let anyone know about it. This is why living there can be quite frustrating. Everyone should be equal and the same to the point where it become ridiculous. In many ways it is similar to Japan. I thought therefore that a sentence containing this word would demonstrate this. The very simple word for dish has also been mistaken with "law".

A classic example of when google translate has been suspectedly used is when going to restaurants, bars and shops here in Japan. Some of the signs that have been put up is hilarious and has clearly not been double checked by anyone.. This is very funny..

    the 4 icon challenge ds106

Please say that I only used 4 icons.

This assignment was to take one movie
and represent that movie in 4 simple icons.

    The thing is,
I couldn't think of any movie.

The first few movies that came in mind were
    all disney movies.
But I couldn't come up with any idea for icons.

I wonder how many times I asked myself:

Are you really majoring in art?

    The answer is,
    unfortunately,
    yes.

    I lack idea.

So, I decided to think differently.
    Not "art",
    but "how to explain".

And I came up with our good old friend,
    charades.

    When you play charades,
you have to be able to "show" the word in some simple actions.
I somehow thought that charades and this assignment is similar where
you have to be able to "show" the movie in some simple icons.

    I playback my memory...
    back in middle school...
we played charades (in class, I don't remember why)..
    I drew a card...
    I read, "Matrix"

Everyone got it when I did the action for the 2nd icon,
    but here it is.

    I hope everyone understands. haha.

Facebook! And some of the reasons why I don’t use it often.

    by
Yes, I am one of those 21st century people who tries not to use facebook for a wide variety of reasons- my relatives have it, it changes formats once it has found something that works, it doesn't hold my attention long enough, lots of my Japanese friends don't have it, etc...

But the main reason I refuse to use it is because it tracks what you do. Facebook has admitted to, "keep[ing] a timestamped list of the URLs you visit and pair it with your name, list of friends, Facebook preferences, email address, IP address, screen resolution, operating system, and browser," while you remain logged in to the site and, "captures [capturing] everything except your name, list of friends, and Facebook preferences. Instead, it uses a unique alphanumeric identifier to track you," when you're logged out (Here's The Information Facebook Gathers On You As You Browse The Web). However, it claims that this is only for sites with the widely-recognized "like" button that facebook attaches to just about anything it wants to. This information is then distributed to, "...third-party app developers," similar to how supermarket cards (if you've ever shopped at a grocery store overseas & joined their rewards program, you'll know what I'm talking about) collect information about you based on what you buy, then promote certain products they feel you'll be interested in (I'm sure I sound like Fox Mulder by now...Soon the aliens will come and force feed us little food capsules based on what we get at the supermarket, etc...) (Christopher Soghoian in How Much Should People Worry About the Loss of Online Privacy? and Supermarket cards
    threat to privacy?
    ).

However, it's not just advertisers I'm worried about when it comes to facebook. Any government that claims to give its citizens freedom of speech, yet has contractors that go into groups that oppose its policies in order to eliminate them is no longer providing its citizens with freedom of speech. According to NaturalNews:
"A secret campaign to take out groups and organizations that oppose the policies and agendas of the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC) and the US government has been outed, thanks to an archive of private emails obtained by Think Progress. According to reports, USCC hired HBGary, Federal and several other defense contractors to create fake accounts on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter in order to sabotage progressive groups critical of the organization's platform"(Exposed: Military contractors hired to create fake Facebook accounts, infiltrate opposing groups
    ).
I'm not saying that I'm fearful of what the government does as a whole, but rather what it does in order to achieve its goals. (I really sound like Mulder...Sheesh.)

I guess the best way to summarize this, as well as to warn you about what you shouldn't say on any social network, would be:
"You wouldn't be surprised that a rock concert is loud, or that a swimming pool is wet, so don't be shocked when you learn that a social network shares data. It is better to assume that anything you post on a social network may one day be public, and think carefully about posting that rant about how fat and lazy your boss is no matter which group you think you are sharing it with" (Facebook and Privacy Don't Mix Well). Watch what you click + what you write, having that end up in an advertiser's, or worse, your boss' inbox, isn't a good thing.

Final exam question: How can you remove your personal information from services such as facebook? (Answer: More about your online privacy)
