    How fans use social media

    by

I will be talking about how fans use social media as a tool for making their favorite artist benefit from a rumor they've spread or creating a bad rumor about the artist having bad consequences on the artist itself. I also want to mention a few things about the topic in general.

Social media is today a major meeting place for people all over the world. Uses of social media has increased in recent years. From having been used almost exclusively for communication between friends and acquaintances are now companies, organizers and even music artists and fans starting to use social media as a marketing tool.

For a record label, a new talent is only a few mouse clicks away when a video on Youtube might include a potential future superstar. An unknown artist has thus the possibility of being detected by both new listeners and professionals, either through direct exposure or through a chain of people, through which the video or the song finally reaches an influential person in the music realm. Already established artists can also use social media, for example, maintain contact with their listeners. This can be done through daily Twitter posts or pictures and videos that are posted on Facebook or Youtube. Internet and fans using social network has brought a radical change for music artists.

Social media like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter have for some time been used by fans as well as artists to make themselves known in their own means or fans to market, bring their favorite artists or degrade those who are not popular for some reason. It has been shown that through Facebook a large number of artists have fallen or risen in popularity because of fans and regular users daily posting

An example of an artist who embraced Twitter as a way to market their music is Imogen Heap. She asked he hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers for help when she would write a biography to promote an upcoming album. She received more than two thousand submissions from her fans. As thanks for their help and additional marketing, she published small sound clips in her tweets from the upcoming album at the time.

When I got assigned to the group I'm in, it was already decided that our topic on fans and social medias was gonna be about AKB48 as there are a few example of fans shaping the popularity of the group. But because I wanted to mention other things in this blog post, ill only be presenting a few things related to this girl group. What I find more interesting is how groups in general or fans today can use social medias to get them to a certain status.

Finally, an example of a fan making profit for its idol in some way are this guy who bought a whole lot of cd’s increasing the sales for his favorite group, AKB48.

Akb48 has had a lot of success from social medias with fans literally choosing who out of the 48 girls they prefer to be the next leading singer of an up and coming single and to top it off, a digital version of all the 48 members faces has been created to meet the needs of the fans and give the group even more popularity.

It is safe to say that today it lies in the hands of the fans whether an artist can do a breakthrough or not, how fast it is going to take before the breakthrough will come or how long they are going to last on the market.

    The Power of Fans

    by
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time without internet and cellphones, there were many protests against the the social and political injustices of the Vietnam war. It was also an era that gave birth to some of the most famous musicians such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones.

Fast forward to now, 4 decades later, a time where the majority of people use cellphones and computer on a daily basis. A time where the technology and the internet has empowered the people; empowered the fans. In a pop culture era where big record labels and mainstream media encourage their artist and their fans, to accept monotonous music as the norm instead of encouraging opinions and creativity, one artist made a difference.

Lupe Fiasco, whose real name is Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, rose to fame in 2006 following the success of his Grammy Award nominated debut album, Food & Liquor. His father's Black Panther ideology has influenced Lupe, and can be heard in many of his music as he speaks about social injustices, and never dumbing down his own opinions, but the record labels were only satisfied with that, which lead to his 3rd album, Lasers, being delayed for 2 years.

His fans weren't pleased with that, and through an internet forum, they began discussing what they could do. As the fans became more restless, the ideas to make the record label release Lupe's album began to grow. In 2 months, an online petition was signed by 28 thousand fans, yet the record label didn't respond. Never giving up, the fans went on twitter and created #FiascoFriday, a hashtag for the protest they planned on October 15th, 2010. Lupe Fiasco himself became involved and twitted that if the fans will be there, then so will he. What was meant as a protest, became a celebration for the hundreds of fans who showed up in New York, after record label finally gave an official release day for Lupe's album.

In an interview, Lupe said that it was an "amazing, humbling, and inspiring" experience to know "that your music is actually something that people want. And it's something that is successful, not in selling records, but the way it moves people and inspires them to do better for themselves."

When the fans were asked "Why don't you protest something that's really worth it? Child hunger, poverty, or whatever." The response was, "You listen to Lupe Fiasco’s music, that's what he talks about. He addresses that." When music is allowed to be creative, it will empower the fans.

"I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit
Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets
How much money does it take to really make a full clip
9/11 building 7 did they really pull it
Uhh, And a bunch of other cover ups
Your childs future was the first to go with budget cuts
If you think that hurts then, wait here comes the uppercut
The school was garbage in the first place, thats on the up and up"

Use of Social Media in Coporations

    by
In this blog I will focus on business, whether they may be big small or even a corporation that use social media such as twitter and facebook sort of sites to their advantage in the market and reach out to the customers.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/5164216/Dominos-Pizza-defends-reputation-on-Twitter-after-YouTube-video-shows-employees-abusing-food.html

Probably the most known story of a business and social net work mix is when Domino's employee released a video of them doing stuff to the food and distributing that product to the customer.

As you can see in the video the male employee is passing wind on a sandwich and shoving cheese up his nostril. It was said that the two employee did this only as a stunt and a fake, also said that the food never went out to the customers. But it was too late, because by the time the video was taken down millions of people watched it and felt disgusted.

Patrick Doyle, the president of Domino's USA responded quickly by making a video response. It is because of the social media that Domino's was able to respond to this sickening act of these two employees. Not very soon after the video went up one of bloger alerted Domino's on April 13th 2009. Domino's also made a twitter account after the incident @dpzinfo to respond to comments. Domino's also has its own original twitter account @dominos to tweet back what people have said about Domino's and how much they enjoy it. What his does is, makes the customers who ordered food from Domino's special and makes that special tie, which could increase their customer loyalty.

Also what Domino's does is use facebook to connect to their customers and advertise at the same time. When there is a special deal going on they would make a post of facebook or e-mail any one who liked their page. With this the customers are always reminded that if there is a special deal they get to know about it as soon as possible. Also they make post on their wall such as :
“LIKE” this if you eat pizza on game day. Who are you rooting for today?

This post puts the company on the same level as the customer, because there are some people who order pizza and watch the game. By making this post Domino's look like they are interested in the same game/sport as the customer and now they share a common interest.

As you can see, social media is a great and maybe the fastest way to spread news around, it could be actual fact or a rumor but in the end it sends the message across. It is also a great way for big corporations reaching out to customers and inform them and even make a connection with them. Pop Culture and Social Media has become one of the great ways to get new customers and keep customer loyalty.

    Social Media and Artists

    by
Our group are going to talk about how artists promote themselves using social media.

I want to talk about an popular hair designer in Japan.

    Her name is Atsue Nshioka.
She is described as an creative director who influence not only on beauty industry, but also on fashion and culture.
She puts her hairstyle on famous Japanese website, Biglobe.

Generally we can find hairstyle from magazines.
But sometime it is very difficult to follow the procedure by reading directions and looking at image.

However internet allows us to see the how to with video.
Oral explanations and moving image are so much clear and easy to understand compared to book.
See the video from the website.

All her hairstyle are cute, easy, and creative!

She also put her blog address the website, so her fans can communicate with her and they love to ask her question about beauty.
On her blog, she introduce some advice to attain beauty, healthy food, cute clothes and so on.

I think she is successful in promoting her beauty skills using the social media.

New Stream of POP Culture: Fan Films

    by
    Welcome back to my Blog!
I belong to the group of Fans 2 in my class, so I would like to introduce a interesting new stream of POP culture driven by fans on social media. That's FAN FILMS!
The idea of the fan film – an amateur, not-for-profit work inspired by a commercial movie, TV show or comic book – (Jane Graham) (Link here!)
Watch this one for example. ("Re : dbz kamehameha tutorial after effects" by Mocarg)

You see tons of fan films like this if you surf YouTube. What encouraged fans to make these movies?

    (1) Price of high quality PC and editing software.

Film editing used to need big and expensive machines and studio.
Not long ago, video editing was possible only with the help of expensive equipment and a substantial amount of training (infoweblinks.com)
So film editing was only for Professional people and you needed to be rich to make fan films for your hobby.

How about now? Many good quality PC costs  less than 1000$ (Check here!). Movie editing software costs about 150$-1000$ (Source!). Moreover, some software like Windows Movie Maker cost 0$! These amazing price change enabled fans to edit own fan films for their hobby today.

    (2) YouTube and other movie sharing plat forms.

They got equipments for their jobs. Great! Then what they got next is space that they can share their movies to other people. YouTube and other movie sharing plat forms have been acting a big role for this part. Fans upload their fan films, evaluate each others. This is a new wave of POP culture started by fans on social media.

Because of these reasons, fan films became so popular and it is no longer just a hobby of fans.
If you have any favorite movie, TV show, anime, comic, etc, go to YouTube. You see some fan-made videos and it makes you smile.

    More examples ! (StarWars)
