    Corporations and Pop Culture

    by
Large corporations affect the society in numerous ways especially when it comes to the different means by which they approach their clients in marketing their products or services. Corporations have a big role in pop culture, they have the power to advertise anything they want and make it popular with various ways of advertisements.

Advertising is present in almost all forms of communication; the Internet, the telephone, the print media, billboards, the postal system, television, radio. People can even advertise by talking face to face with others. On the Internet, businesses, companies and corporations have their own Web pages advertising their products, their ways of doing business, their employees, or their services. There are ads placed all over various Web pages.. On the telephone, telemarketing brings advertising down to one person trying to persuade the other into buying a product or a service by word of mouth. In the printing media advertisements are so common that when we look through a magazine we're surrounded by it. It contributes to the loss of distinct cultures and the formation of a mainstream one, a culture of pop music and Gap clothing. The print media is probably the most widespread form of advertising; books, newspapers, magazines, flyers, catalogues. Many big corporations with good advertising attract consumers who are often willing to pay big money for a brand-name.

Advertising is so widespread that everyone in the world is exposed to some form of it, just as with any other type of art. It is seen or heard by so many people in so many different ways that it can measure up to other forms through which people express themselves. A good ad has potential to effect somebody more than some other types of art. More people may be exposed to advertisements such as those in fashion magazines and on billboards and posters more than they are exposed to other forms of art, and many ads show the feelings or the images that are familiar, influential and appealing to the lives of people.

All these advertisements are done by major corporations, therefore, they are the main reason for the thrive of pop culture. Big corporations sponsor the brand or whatever that is trying to sell or become popular and use all the means shown above and make it become big and famous.

What would we be without these corporations? Our world would become a boring place without competitions between companies and therefore it would be a world without creativity. These competitions make the artists or brand makers be more competitive and therefore try to be more creative to produce something that the others haven’t produce or created yet to make better money. And thus the pop culture gets created.

Here is a company that won a Clio Award for the McDonalds advertisement, it is called Leo Burnett and it is one of the leading advertisement corporations in the world.

What would you do first when you have an important date or a meeting? You will consider what clothes to wear while opening the closet. Despite the gender, clothes are the best means to appeal themselves. Fashion can make people to have confidence and to appear trustworthy. Surely for women putting make up is a way to attract people and to improve their appearance.

    1. Fashion industry publishes new fashion items and the trend of the year.
    2. Fashion leader who catch fashion trend.
    3. Fashion became one of important pop cultures.

    1. Where do people get information about fashion?

    2. Celebrities should pay attention to their dress code. They    are often judged by bloggers and viewers as the best or worst dresser.

    < Japan Fashion Magazine

Due to the developed social network, celebrities should pay attention to their dress code even when they go to the airport, to a restaurant and a convenient store. If they dress well, their clothing will be a fashion icon on which people support. However, if they do not, their fashion is robbed right and left consistently.

     Celebrities' causual dress >

1.This is often used as a fashion business strategy.

2.Brand “Tory Burch” is a good example. A woman named Tory Burch, who is influential in high American society, launched a Brand named “Tory Burch”.

3.She used good ways to promote her brand. She is so smart CEO.

1.Sometimes, this would result bad consequences. People are not rich enough and cannot afford to buy luxury brand to follow celebrities’ dress.

2.Instead it causes prevalent knockoffs in the market.

Fashion is a way of expression and is significant in the pop culture. In recent days, fashion is highly regarded as one’s individuality and fashion would be important part of people’s life style.

Weekly Blog Post #2 "Pop Culture"

    by

I have been studying for a year and a half in Japan. When I came to Japan for the first time, it was hard to meet Korean culture. However, many Korean teenagers were eager to Japanese culture such as animation, music and manga.

However, now it is easy to access Korean music in Japan. Korean girl groups are on Japanese television show programs and commercials and it indicates the spread of Korean culture in Japan.

Korean girl groups are working in various fields. Girl’s generation, Kara, and 2NE1 are representative of Korean music girl groups. Their music is often located in a high rank on a music chart, and many people see, listen, and sing their music through “You Tube”. The reason why Korean girl groups are popular in Japan is that they have powerful performance and great proportion compared of Japanese girl groups I think. In addition, Paris Hilton, most famous celebrity in the world, posted 2NE1 music video on her blog with comment “why U.S cannot make singer like 2NE1” and it became really a hot issue in Korea. Recently, the concert was held in Paris successfully. It shows that the Korean music has become well known around the world.
The people who enjoy listening to Korean music also show curiosity on girl group’s fashion, activity, and even their comments. Few years ago, Japanese fashion, known as Harajuku Fashion, was popular among Korean teenagers. Now in an opposite situation, where Korean culture is coming to Japan.
Recently, number of friends asking about Girls’ generation and Kara has increased. It is really good news to hear that people who do not know well about Korea have curiosity on Korean culture along the spread of Korean girl groups’ music. I hope that this current situation is not only a temporary trend, and it keeps to grow constantly as a cultural icon.

    Artist2 social networking in Japan

    by
    I never left Japan,
and I don't really know much about American culture,
so I will focus on social networking and artist only in Japan.

A lot of Japanese artists use social networking services such as
    mixi (jp)
    twitter (eng)
    GREE (jp)
    and a little bit of
    facebook (eng)

Artists use these sites other than their official homepage
to interact with their fans by
     writing about their daily life
       (fans can comment)
    uploading photos
      (fans can comment)
     advertizing
       (fans can be notified)
replying to @tweets and direct messages
       (fans are happy)

I actually got a reply from this one singer
when I sent him a direct message,
    and I really got excited.

The message was only 2 or 3 sentences
but it made me so happy
    that I wrote on facebook

"  I am so happy that I am going to die.  "
    haha.

There are a lot of ways artists can use social networking services to interact with their fans.

    It is interesting,
that just by posting blogs and pictures
you can also become an 'artist'
    receiving comments
    and replying to those comments.

'Artists' are not just famous people you see on TV everyday,
    but are people you admire.
Those 'artist' doesn't have to be a professional.
A 'fan' can turn into an 'artist' someday
just like producers and singers that are now famous in NicoNicoDouga (jp).

I don't know where I am trying to end up now
so I think I should stop writing...
Social networking sites are some ways that Artists can
    directly interact with their fans,
and they can connect closer than when they are on TV.

    ...I think.

POP culture weekly blog post #2 (due 10/04)

    by
our group. artist 1, is working on how artists use social media to promote themselves.

I focused on 神聖かまってちゃん(shinsei kamattechan) which is a japanese indie rock band and consists of four members which are Noko, Chibagin, Mono, and Misako.
The reason why I chose 神聖かまってちゃんis because the way they use social media is SO different from others.
I thought that most of bands either popular or indie use managers or companies to promote themselves which means bands are not basically promoting themselves but companies.
BUT in the case of 神聖かまってちゃん, the vocal of the group, NOKO, promotes his band himself by going on 2channel and Niko Niko douga and posting the link to his music videos to get attention by viewers.
Since his lyrics mean something relates to "a loser who have failed to make a connection with people"(which means himself) and music sound is random, the name "shinsei kamattechan" became widely known.

Not only the lyrics and music sound but also his performance on the stage should be paid attention.

His face sometimes gets covered by blood from his head.
His eyes are opened so much.
He sometimes takes his pants off.
    and so on..
Since I cannot upload a photo of 神聖かまってちゃん、 I decided to draw a picture of Noko.
I hope you will get some sense of the band.

    FANS

    by
As I explained in last post, the development of the internet created new pop culture, video sharing. YouTube and ニコニコ動画 would be the pioneers of this field. These video sharing sites have provided many people with the place to show their talents to a lot of audience all over the world. Therefore, especially YouTube has become the good place to dig up new talents who used to be an amateur. Furthermore, most these newcomers gained their fame by covering famous songs. It means that fans become professional through social media.

I would like to introduce two examples of fans on YouTube.

The first one is Nick Pitera. Nick is a bif fan of Disney films, so he has posted many cover songs of the Film on YouTube since 2006. After graduating University, he is working at Pixer now. I put the most famous his video, the cover of “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin.

If you are interesting in him, you can see more video from his channel!
By the way, he is also famous in Japan. His jaw line is kind of charming, so some Japanese fans call himアゴジン.” (アゴ means jaw in Japanese and it puns Aladdin.)

    The second example is 2CELLOS.

2CELLOS are Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser. They are from Croatia. The two were discovered after uploading a music video of their cello-only cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" to YouTube. Their video made over 5 million hits in less than 3 months on YouTube. This achievement let them to sign to Sony Masterworks, and then made debut in 2011.

The development of the internet has created new pop culture, video sharing and given meny people places to flourish. This movement would get a boundary between professional and amateur more ambiguous than before. Video sharing sites are not only pop culture but also the place to influence one's future.

How artists use social media & how things all relate to my job.

    by
So our group did work on how artists (of all kinds) use social media to promote themselves & their work.

I focused specifically on Joseph Tame and how he uses twitter and RunKeeper to create and promote his running art and his social media-semi-alternative art contraption, the iRun.

Video interview uploaded! Some of the parts overlap a bit, but enjoy!

    Part 1:

    Part 2:

    Part 3:

The final project can be viewed here:

While I did not focus on music artists, I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about my job .

I work at a live house (essentially the fancy term for a concert venue)in Shibuya. I am the only 外人 on staff, meaning if my coworkers have questions about the English language (my manager, pictured below, really loves learning all about swear words) or if a foreign customer comes in, my coworkers come to me to ask for help.

(This is from my coworker & was taken last Christmas when we had the gigantic tree up.)

Day after day I deal with managers, staff and even artists involved in the music industry (dur). I see the pain of over-aggressive and neurotic managers on staff & artists alike and, after months of watching it happen, I decided what I want to do with my life: change the system. While it may take time, my ultimate goal is to create a management system in Japan where artists not only have freedom to create, but also freedom to talk or not talk about their personal lives/significant others/etc on twitter/mixi/facebook/what have you.

Anyhow, enough of my ranting about the industry.
