The Best and the Worst Aspects of the Internet.

    Negative

As I have mentioned in my blog post four and five, the use of internet can do harm to a person in many different areas. It could be from harming ones computer and loss of many important files to complete destruction of the computer hardware. Maybe there is not a lot of important files and documents on the computer, but most of us use social net work cites to keep in touch with many important people and these people put them self out there to the public by uploading and even just liking comments and video shared links.

Lets first look over the computer viruses and malware. Like I mentioned above that in my previous blog I have talked about malware and explained it a little bit. Let us go further into detail a little bit. There is a thing, or should I say attack called Denail of Service (DoS) attack. What DoS attack does is it prevents a a user from connecting and using and accessing information from a server. How this is achieved is when the DoS attacker overloads the server with many "flood" of request and information the host server and network cannot handle the load. A server can only handle a certain amount of  request at one time and if it overflooded by the attacker one cannot access the server.

Now this may not sound that much of a problem but when it is applied to a bigger scale it is a different story. One of the example is the the Anonymous Group's multiple attacks on big corporations and government websites. The attack on Visa.com and MasterCard.com was a big uproar to the community.

As you can see the use of Internet has created this another world of violence around the world where the people do not even need to be present at the location to cause this mass disruption, and it could lead up to loss of millions of dollars in a matter of hours.

    Positive

Now lest look at the positive effect of Internet. The use of Internet has revolutionized the way we interact with each other. We are free to say and think what ever we want in our minds, and now with Internet we can express that feeling (almost) freely. Website such as Facebook, MySpace, and Hi5 have connected us with people around the globe and does not fail to keep that relationship strong even though the people may be 15 hour flight away from each other. John Ryan did a very good article on this subject of Relationship Benefits from the Internet.

The anonymity and freedom that the internet gives us can also be a good thing. It gives people an opportunity to speak freely without fear of retribution and gives everyone a voice. It also gives people the opportunity to ‘try out’ different personas and shed their social anxiety which can be a liberating experience. Internet is a place where people are judged only on the quality of their contributions.

Soon governments may take advantage of this open forum and start listening more closely; an age may exist where we all get a say on every decision that affects us, where we act as ‘one mind’ in decisions that affect the general public, but as completely autonomous and free individuals the rest of the time.

Direction: 1.Choose two or more articles from the four Scoop It channels (links below)  I’ve set up that are related to a similar issue. Compare and contrast the various articles and state your own opinion on the matter. Your must provide support for your opinion based on the articles from the Scoop It channels and other materials you have found that are related. You will be expected to provide links back to the supporting articles. You also will need to include at least two excerpted quotes from any of the supporting materials you choose.

I would like to talk about malware sction from Scoop.
To discribe about malware I want to use two articles.
First article is Don’t fall for malware and scam deals this shopping season
Second article is 'Twilight' fans targeted in Facebook scam

The first article talks about on-line shopping. When we use on-line shopping, we have a risk to get malwares.Such as nowdays, many people buy manythings by internet.
Especially, after Thanks giving, many people start Christmas shoppong.
Actually those days many people do not go to shops to buy products because they use on-line shoppiong.On-line shopping is easy and sometimes cheaper than shops, so many people use those.
As many people know, to use on-line shopping, people need to use Credit cards.
But if that on-line shopping site have some malware or if your PC have malware, your credit card nunmber is stolen by criminal and you will loose a lot of money.
Sometimes, spam maile pretended to be a real Apple store and send  e-mail to say here is your I-tune card. Therefore ater the people open that e-mail, people's PC gets malware.
Whatever, what this article want to say is we need to be careful to use on-line shopping site.

Second article talks about when we look at or opne some favorite web-site, we have risk to get malware. The article mentions, some people are very interested to the movie of "Twilight" and they want to know and they want to play that moviess site, so they put the "Play now" button. However, that botton is a malware bottun and after they push the bottum, thier PC get the malware.
The criminals created a lot of way to spread malware for many people, so people need to be careful about which site they watch and which site and file they will be open.

Basically both sites talks about how on-line have risk to get malware.
The article "Don’t fall for malware and scam deals this shopping season" says
"You become a victim of online fraud and identity theft."
The article "'Twilight' fans targeted in Facebook scam"says that
"The link leads to what looks like a Facebook page with a "play now" button that when clicked surreptitiously "likes" the link and spreads it on a visitor's Facebook account. "

According to those articles we need to be careful to use Internet.
Here is a interesting video that talks about instraction of Cellphone. In Japan many kids use cell phone and they use Internet daily by cell phone, but kids do not know about Internet rule, so they are easy to get Malware or access to negative impact sites. Sometimes it leads children's discrimination and sometimes it lead a crazy expensive amount.
This video try to teach how to use Internet safty.

Basically Both articles talks about different categorize, but both article say "The malware is the reason to broken people's PC and it lead some crime"
    .
Here is other video to descrive what Malware is

When I use on-line shopping, I use only trust web-sites such as Amazon.
Some people are afraid to put thier credit card number, so they use cash on delivery system.
I think If you feel uncomftable, you do not have to use credit card and if you are not comftable to use internet shopping, you do not have to use eaither.

Last week, I got a e-mail from my old friend. The e-mail title had my olf friends' name, but I learned about spam mail in this class, so I did not open that e-mail. I send message for my old friend and ask him "Did you send me e-mail because I got a e-mail that looks like spam mail?" and my friend send me back e-mail and said he did not send me e-mail for me.
After that I felt lit bit scary because if I did not learn about malware this class, I might opend that e-mail and my PC got a malware.
PC is not cheap products, so we do need to keep good condition as much as we can and want to use log time. Also, our private infromation is impossible to put prise, so we really need to be careful about malware and computer virouse.

O RLY? meme. Original creator unknown.
The Internet. That gigantic digital mass of floating...what?? It's not Flying Spaghetti Monsters (FSM), but even those are par for the course (hence the website link). Evidently the Internet is many things to many people so if you're still wondering about definitions perhaps it's worth noting the diversity of opinions. There's just so much stuff on the Internet, and it leads one to arguably define it as possibly being the collective input of humankind in shiny, digital form (OooOooooooOOoooooo..orly? [Know Your Meme]). Or at least as close as we've ever come to such a lofty goal. Go technology?

Now, bear in mind though that input is input is input, and that it can be of a positive, intellectual, inspirational...or entirely silly nature. It's neutral; it's both. It's a point that may sound contradictory but isn't that precisely what we are? We go to school and the office like responsible human beings doing responsible things, but we're just as likely to blow it all off once in a while and party just a little too much (insert embarrassing Facebook photo here). So no wonder that the Internet, just like any other form of media reflects that duality and may be defined by such.

    Are you a wizard meme.
    Original creator unknown.
In fact, I would say that this collective input, beyond the topic of definitions may also serve as examples of the best and worst aspects of the Internet because the reasons are one and the same: User-created content and interaction. Big words? Lemme level that down a little for you: You make/say/appropriate something, put it somewhere on the Internet, other people see that and interact right back. Magic.

Or as we civilised folk choose to call it: Facebook. Or YouTube, Wikipedia, any of the dozens of websites and services which facilitate user interaction (i.e. Just about every one?), even if it's just a comment or a Like button you're getting to have your say in some form or another and in most cases you even get to give your own opinion. How's that for freedom of speech?

But let's take the Wikipedia example for a further test-drive shall we? Anyone can basically go in and freely edit any topic, any page, even create something silly (Wikipedia). Oops. The great thing about this is it's basically an online encyclopedia (does anyone really buy the rock-heavy paper kind anymore?), except it's up-to-date on everything from the latest game releases, that upcoming Batman movie and perhaps even a slathering of juicy celebrity gossip. And if it's not? Take charge; get right in there and add that pivotal sliver of information yourself. What's not to like?

    Cave Troll
Cave Troll by ElDave via CC Licensing.
Well, quite a lot actually. The thing about the freedom that the Internet provides for user interaction and the creation of content is that it also backfires because not everyone is going to be as upstanding and responsible as you and I (and I know that you know that we can totally be trusted...right??). Some people? Well they're just arses (I love that spelling; also, Blogger spellcheck doesn't), or trolls (Tek-Bull). No one likes trolls.

It's this undermining of credibility and lack of authors' credentials and accountability that has many people, especially academic institutions up in arms about the use of Wikipedia as a source of information and citation. ...but is it really that bad? Authors such as this gentleman here (Burleson Consulting) explain why they think "Accountability would improve Wikipedia", and to be fair he does present sensible arguments and comparisons with search engines, spin-off wikis et cetera. But he's also missing the point.

No one ever said that Wikipedia is a credible source of information, not even Wikipedia themselves. In fact the comparison that the guy from Burleson Consulting makes between Wikipedia and search engines is exactly right: Wikipedia is really a search engine/encyclopedia hybrid and just as you would not trust everything that pops up in your Google searches, so too should you counter-check the credibility and content of a Wikipedia page before taking the information as fact. Actually, you might even want to do that for "traditional" sources of information such as print and TV news stations (Huffington Post). The point is less whether sites which allow user interaction and content are credible or otherwise, and more as to whether Internet users are sensible enough to make informed decisions on the information they are given, in any form, but that's a problem of education and common sense rather than the Internet and Wikipedia. On the other hand what Wikipedia does offer is an initial overview of...well just about anything you would want to search for, just like a search engine except that it also has write-ups and usually other forms of information (pictures, even audio files) on the topic at the same time, on the same page. Now, would you like some fries with that?

The real question is how do you determine which of that information is right and which is not, and the answer is citation. It's true that a lot of information on sites like Wikipedia are never cited, but what is also true is that a lot of them are, and very nicely laid out too. Think a particular statement is in doubt? Head over to the citation link and check it out for yourself, a course of action that this study (Francke, Sundin) also advocates:

Several studies have shown that students often use Wikipedia strategically to get an overview of a topic, but that they are hesitant to use or refer to it in situations where they need to be certain of something, for instance in school assignments, where teachers are often critical of the use of Wikipedia as a source. A bit surprisingly, the study by Luyt et alindicated that the young users mainly used Wikipedia for school purposes rather than for interests concerned with their extracurricular interests. The students were generally aware that Wikipedia could be edited 'by anyone', and so took that into account when they consulted it. The students also compared claims from Wikipedia articles with claims from other sources to determine if the claims were credible.

The same goes for any other site you find on the Internet. Just because someone thinks that a certain piece of information is not up to snuff doesn't mean it's wrong, or that it shouldn't be there (because personally, I don't think spaghetti should be flying at all if it could be in my stomach instead. Just saying). The answer is to double-check the information yourself and come to an informed decision, and while you're off doing that the rest of us who don't need the information for such serious business can sit back and read some wikis, maybe watch a YouTube video or two.

Thing is though, this would be happily ever after if the story ended right here. But it doesn't. Apart from credibility the freedom of the Internet also allows for the question of a lack of responsibility, if not outright anonymity. This is exactly what sites such as 2Channel and its English counterpart 4Chan offer. Let's get to the bad stuff first this time: Libel, slander, defamation and even infringment of privacy, as noted succinctly by this author (Hamazaki). The question is what would you do if you thought you couldn't be tracked for your actions? If your online persona could exist without a face or name, and the answer at least for some is that they would go for any manner of improper behaviour that would certainly not be kosher for any situation that requires any actual face-to-face contact.

...visual anonymity encourages individuals to perceive the self and others less as individuals and more as representatives of a social group. This, in turn, sensitizes interactants to the social norms embodied by the group, and fosters group-normative behaviors that are consistent with these social norms. (Bvee and Cvitkovic, Anonymity in Computer-Mediated Communication in Japanese and Western Contexts - Comparisons and Critiques - 2010), via Hamazaki

The unfortunate thing here is that apart from the most gruesome of cases (Kotaku), there is largely nothing anyone can do about bad behaviour on the Internet except to stay away from known hotbeds of flaming and trolling (Tek-Bull) where possible, and to ignore the rest that one comes across (don't go to 4Chan...as a general rule, don't go there). A level of anonymity will always be part of the experience when you're talking about connecting with people from all over the world (and we are). It's like bad neighbourhoods; stay away from the bad ones and the rest are fine. Just be smart about it.

On the other hand however even such anonymous sites have their good points, and using the example of 2Channel again it is precisely because of anonymity that users are willing to be adventurous and create inspiring content such as Train Man (collection of 2Channel posts). Train Man (or, Densha Otoko) was a series of anonymous posts on 2Channel that told the continuing story of a reclusive "otaku" (nerd), his saving of a woman from harassment while riding a train and the love story that resulted from that chance encounter. What makes Train Man unique is the fact that the story is told entirely through short, informal posts on the 2Channel message board, inclusive of Japanese-style emoticons (kaomoji) and various other inputs from readers who followed the Train Man's journey at the time of its original telling. The story has since been collected, published as a book and even turned into a movie (Flare Gamer), but perhaps what is most remarkable is that given the Japanese reluctance to share personal information, let alone one nerd's harrowing journey to find the girl of his dreams, had 2Channel not been based around the concept of user anonymity that kind of creative input would almost certainly not exist.

So in the end when considering the above points; the pros of collective human knowledge and creative input, and the cons of unreliability and various forms of bad behaviour and infringement of privacy, what can we conclude? The thing is, it's not a be-all-end-all plus or minus, but rather the realisation that the Internet's greatest aspect is also its Achilles' heel. The freedom to interact and have user-generated content, to view this swathe of collective input whenever and wherever is what defines the Internet as something unique and indeed intrinsic in our time, just as the introduction of print revolutionised the potential for communication and indoctrination of certain ideals when it was invented.

In the end, be it print, wireless communication, the Internet or any other form of technology to come what all of it boils down to is that all of these are merely tools for human expression. It is flawed, but it is because of this that the Internet is beautiful in its potential and content, for the reason that it presents us a reflection of ourselves, as people.

    Final Exam Essay Question

    by

    Is Internet Good or Bad?

I, myself is a heavy Internet user.
Internet is something that I absolutely cannot live without, but for this blog
post I got a chance to think about the good and the bad about internet.

There are both several things that are good and about the internet.

First the good parts about the internet. One is that its a fast way of communication.
This is the first thing that came up in my mind because I use the internet
mainly to communicate people. What I mean by communicating with people
is "Social Network". Social networks such as facebook and twitter are so useful
when it comes to contacting your friends and your family.
Without the internet, there would be no facebook therefore internet is the basis
of everything that are ordinary right now in our lives.

Another good thing about the internet and social network is that it can be
used as an useful tool for marketing and bussinesses. For example companies
use facebook to look at the votes for their products and find out what customers
are actually looking for in their products. A communication strategist from Oxford
Communications said that facebook is a useful tool for organizations to advertise
    and sell their products.
Why Facebook’s New Questions Tool Is Good for Brands & Businesses

Last most good thing about the internet is that people anywhere in the world
have access to information, pictures, even music or movies online.
Probably the most popular and famous place to purchase music and movies
would be iTunes. Just register the credit card number, one click and anybody
has an easy access to their favorite music and movies. This is a super convenient
tool for those who want to easily purchase things but have no time to actually
go to the store. Internet widens the activities that people do at home and
make many things covenient for a lof people.

Now, on to the bad things about the internet.
Even though I have mentioned that good things about the internet, there are
many arguments that can go against the good.

First about the "Social Network" online, it is fun, addicting and an useful tool
for many people, it creates a lot of problems at the same time.
Since many people spend most of their time on social network online,
websites such as facebook are big targets for Malware and other viruses.
People might try to add new people on their list of friends and might
put themselves in danger without knowing its a virus. Read More on -> Friend Request Virus
Hackers take advantages of the popularity of facebook and create
virus through advertisements and even on friend requests.

Another bad factor about the internet relating to the previous good things,
is that not everybody actually purchase the information, music or movies online.
Many people find programs, softwares or websites that let music or movies
download free online. Even if people are aware of the fact that the better
quality version and officially approved versions can be purchased online,
many people choose to not pay and view them for free.

Downloading free music or streaming free movies online is completely
illegal and are subject to be against copyright. Not only music and movies,
even books, comics and documents are available online, also can be found
free on some websites. Major websites such as Amazon.com have online
reading books and documents, if they are of course purchased.
Since such easy accesses are provided for people, the actualy CD record sales,
DVDs, movie tickets and books have declined in its sales.

Last bad thing about the internet is that it created more problems
on personal information that should not be shared with others.
Since people input their personal information such as home addresses,
numbers, credit card information, hackers have access to all of those if they
find out a way to hack into whatever account. Of course without the internet,
we could have totally avoided the problem of privacy.
This is an example of a supermarket online having access to personal information
without any notice and knowledge of those customers.
    Supermarket Cards Threat to Privacy
People are not aware of what they register in online, and are only thinking
    about what to purchase online.

Looking at both good and the bad on internet, makes me think if internet
is more good or bad. As much as I am truly addicted to the internet and
cannot imagine a day without it, if there was no internet ever created, it would
have avoided many problems that are caused online.

For Final Exam, "The Best and The Worst of Internet"

    by
This is the final post as Assignments of CIS 2011 Fall class.
I hope this is the best and meaningful one.

I decided to talk about the aspects of internet.

Internet has both the best and worst aspects. In my opinion, the best aspect is freedom of expressions. And the worst aspect is the irresponsibility of usage. Most people who use internet doesn't recognize that their behaviors come out with responsibility.

Firstly, I state the best aspect. Like my post "Sex, Religion, and Internet," everybody is allowed to express what they want to express.

But some countried restrict internet because of political reason. For example, China and North Korea. Why do they restrict? It's because internet has the freedom of expressions. These countries have something which they don't want to let their citizens to know. Or, they worry about if citizens share their thoughts or complains.

And I want to introduce one Japanese Manga artist as the best example of "freedom of expressions in internet."

His name is Shuho Sato. His Manga is famous in Japan and some of them became movie. (ex. Umizaru) His life of Manga artist seems to be glorious one. But after some Manga, he started to write the Manga "Bokuman." For some risence contract reason, it was forced to stop. Publisher didn't pay the risence fee of the movie for him.
After that, he decided to show his Manga only on website. Here is his homepage. We can buy his Manga here. He doesn't have any contract to publisher anymore, this is his way of expressions. He choose website as his stage.

Again, this is the famous movie, but there were problems after this movie...

And his website had great impact on Japanese publishers. Like Article: What Will Record Labels Look Like in the Future? by Jason Feinberg, Manga Publisher have to be changed. Jason said "Labels’ traditional revenue streams are drying up and no business can flourish without sustainable income." This is the same as Japanese Manga publisher. But no publisher in Japan tried to change, that's why Shuho was the pioneer.

Secondary, the worst aspect should be stated here. We can send our thoughts to all over the world. But very few people understands what it should cause.

In Japan, we can post our thoughts or photos to Facebook, twitter, mixi, 2-Channel, and all social networking sites. Needless to say, we can post them to our blog like this post.

But sometimes, the serious problem occurs. For example, a man wrote "I will kill many people at Akihabara." on 2-Channel. But because we don't have to sign up for writing 2-Channel Wall, that kinds of posts were usual. Nobody believed it.

But it happened. This is Akihabara massacre. Fumi argued about this incident on his blog "What's Happenning in Japan Right Now?." The post is Akihabara incident and its aftermath. He really love Akihabara, so he is very worry about Akihabara.

Here is the problem. The man who killed people is worth to be punished, but why did nobody believe his post?

Because they usually post on 2-Channel without their own responsibilities. That makes information on internet meaningless.

This fassion has to be improved. I was talking about Japanese one because I have never lived abroad, but surely this kind of issue should happen all over the world.

I stated two aspects of internet, I hope both of them are persuasive ones for you. But Internet is useful and convinient by using right way of policy.

Final Blog Post (Final) The Pros and Cons of using Internet!

    by

I will write about both the best and worst aspect of using internet. The internet is a global system of computer network to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consist of millions of private, public, business, academic and government networks that are linked by broad array of electronic, wireless and networking technologies. The internet carries huge range of information resources and services such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW). Now a days people are using internet almost every day giving and getting a lot of information. Even the elementary schools are having computer classes and almost everyone has their own personal computer in their houses. There are a lot of good and bad aspects of using the internet which I will explain one by one.

I will first talk about the good aspect. Internet is very useful for finding resources!
Internet is used for writing papers, finding a lot of resources, and it is very good for research. There are almost everything in the internet so people do not go to library for their research papers like before. Before the internet came into our life, people used to go to library and read or search for something that they want and it took a lot of time to do such thing. It was very difficult thing to do and it was very time consuming. But these days people just have to type in something in the internet and there!!!! You will find almost anything! It is very useful and I don’t know what it would be without internet… it will be boring for SURE! I got used to using the internet so much that I can’t imagine without internet! It’s just too good for me! Hahahaha
Here are some links (blogs) that it explain what is the good aspect of using the internet.

This explains how to get started with internet Marketing. How people can get into business with internet and how it is very positive! People can just stay at home with their PC and start a business without going out or wearing suits! No stress, just grab a cup of coffee and do your thing at HOME!

This one explains how it is a best aspect of using internet for keeping books online. It is very useful and people are using this system. It is very common and almost most business man knows about this system!

Another best aspect of using internet from my point of view is that you can keep in touch with people all around the world very easily!
There are a lot of things that we can do to update each other these days. Facebook, which almost all students have their own account and keep in touch with people, family members, relatives, and friends. I personally use Facebook everyday and I am very addicted to it! They will upload their pictures and we can see what they’re doing and make a comment on everything! I just love it! I feel more connected and close to a person and I think it is very good. Also we can make a lot of new friends on Facebook, all around of world! It is always good to make new friends ;) Most of the people are usi9ng smart phones which we could use Internet!!!!!! And FACEBOOK!!!!

Here are some blogs of the advantages of using Facebook.

This one explains how Facebook is useful for checking evens. There are a lot of events and it is the easiest ways to find and get invited to the events and PARTY! ;)

This one explains how comments box in Facebook is good and useful. People who have Facebook account know exactly why it is good to have a comment box!

Another advantage of using internet is email! We can use emails for everything. If we want to write for business letters, to keep in touch with people, also it is very useful to talk with our professors. This works both for private, business and professional way of keeping in touch with people. I always write emails to professors if I have questions and they will reply pretty fast and it always works good to ask questions.

Now I will talk about the disadvantages of using internet!
First thing that pops into my mind is that, when we use internet for research it is not so reliable…As I mentioned earlier, internet is a very good thing to use for research and finding sources and information but at the same time, it is a little bit risky! Anyone can make their own blog or create website and write anything that they want and this could be dangerous because the information might not be true. They can write what they think and write a new theory for example. People who do not have a degree, even kids can write whatever because we can never find out what age is the writer and this is very dangerous. The essays can be a little weak if we rely just on internet sources.

Also Internet can be very addictive and people could be spending too much time on internet. Like I mentioned before I use Facebook almost all the time by my phone and I am one of the people who is addictive to internet. This is so bad because it might cause to lose my concentration on my studies and this is very bad… When I open Facebook and write a paper, I am both thinking about my paper and my Facebook, who commented on my status or my picture and so on… Also there are a lot of people who are using online games and they are constantly playing games and this is very bad… It is highly addictive and I don’t like to be one of them.

Violation in privacy is another thing which can be cause by using internet. This could happen in Facebook too. If someone set their account not private, anyone in the world can see their profile and their wall also their personal information and pictures… This could be dangerous and people might get stalker in internet…!!! We just have to make sure and be careful about our setting when we create something, blog, website and new account! Here are some sites for disadvantages!

They both explains a lot of points of advantages and disadvantages of using internet! It is true...

This site explains the disadvantages of using Facebook… Very true and scary!

All and all I think internet is GREAT! But there are few things that we have to be careful when we use it, but if we know what will happen and what are the worst things that could happen, we should be fine. We cannot take out internet from our lives anymore because it is just too useful in any ways!
