I was (am?) never technology savvy…. And honestly I didn’t want to be… I didn’t care for the change…the wave… the revolution, etc. In fact, I looked it with a distrustful eye… I’m not sure why … maybe because I’ve always been one of those “private” people and saw the internet as a potential threat to such a lifestyle.
Then a couple of months ago, I was browsing online and read somewhere that narcissism is the new norm… in reference to facebook pages, blogs, flickr pics, etc. and I decided to remove my profile pic (in which I personally thought I looked great) off of facebook…. Months passed…
And then came ds106… which I approached again with complete mistrust as usual… I confess that I needed to take this course for credit… but boy did I need to take this course!
I literally have a headache … I think I spend at least triple the time figuring the “flow” of things in this class out than an average person would … but I am learning brand new stuff at triple the speed…
I have been part of the “digital facelift” in higher education for a while. I took a bunch of online courses and loved them … but I completely understand what Gardner Campbell is saying when he dismisses them as not true vessels of growth and knowledge… in fact I think that you really need to take an online course… and then ds106 (or it’s like)… and juxtapose these two “categories” of classes to truly understand the urgency of Campbell’s message.
Does that mean that all “mulish Luddites” need to be dragged out kicking and screaming and be forced to either face their worst fears or be turned away from Mary Washington’s doors???? I think it does … I think it does…
