So I wasn’t sure what to use, first of all. I wish I had a Marantz all my own, but for now I’m just using the internal mic on my computer which limits what I can record somewhat (I said somewhat, okay).
So, since we had our first real snowfall of the season (stlll snowing as of 3 pm!), I decided to do a before and after; snow shoveling noises–me huffing it outside, grabbing the shovel, actually shoveling–and, second sound sequence, putting the kettle on–turning on the burner, water boiling, kettle whistling and (secret bonus!) that ba-klump at the end is actually the whistletop actually falling off the kettle, nudged off by the force of the steam.
I recorded both, then edited each down so it wasn’t so boring (first recording clocked in at an unlistenable 2+ minutes on each). Amplified the whistle and the shovel-blacktop scrunches by a factor of about -12 or so. Layered them together (there’s a delay on the kettle sounds; it’s pleasing to hear someone huffing it out in the cold, even if it’s me). Posted it, and voila.
Just a final note (for me, mostly): I’ll be keeping an ongoing journal of TDC thoughts and process issues every Friday. Other weekdays will be kept for making and responding to class materials (bags of gold, 2.0s, etc.).
