setting up & settling in

Running ages late on this, but hey.  Better late than never, right? By way of introduction, here are a few notes on the process of bringing this thing, this blog, into being.

I went with Hover for my domain name.  This required little thought: Hover is cool, because SOPA isn’t. I debated for much longer over who to choose as my webhost.  In the end, I decided against Cast Iron Coding, mostly because of the price.  I found a different webhost – a small orange — which was much cheaper and seems to be a pretty cool company.  Among other things, they are 150% green, which is pretty awesome.  The plan I signed up for has less storage and bandwidth than plans offered by CIC and others, so it will be interesting to see how that will cover my needs as this site evolves over the course of the semester (and possibly beyond).

It only took about a day to point my domain name to the webhost. After that, I installed WordPress pretty easily and got started on the aesthetic side of things.  This is always my biggest challenge.  I’m pretty familiar with WordPress: between blogging for classes all throughout my undergrad career and building an online literary journal last semester, I’ve got the basics down.  Plugins installed, categories set up, so on and etc. But I still have this constant battle with WordPress themes where I’m never quite satisfied. It’s functional, but I have no doubt my experimenting and tweaking will continue.
