Preproduction: Redrum

I really donā€™t like scary movies that much, I don’t do well with sitting in the dark being terrifiedā€¦but I really like The Shining. So I would like to recreate a scene from that movie for the Make A Scene from a Horror Movie project.Ā  While the classic scene of Jack chasing his wife throughout the empty hotel is certainly scary, I personally was more spooked by the son Danny in the Redrum scene.

His voice is just so creepy, and when you see what Redrum means…well, I’m getting chills up my spine just writing about it! It’s such a simple scene, but it conveys so much.

So to recreate it, I would use my boyfriend as the boy Danny – I wouldĀ  avoid filming his face, to try to keep the image that it is a young boy there, but Mike has longish hair like Danny so if he was wearing clothes similar to his, the likeness would be close enough. I would drag some friend of mine to play the mother; it wouldn’t be too difficult, she would just have to act terrified. The hardest part would probably be setting up the mirror in the correct angle so that she can read “redrum” on the door, seeing that it actually says “murder.”

The other hard part would be trying to get the music for it…I may be able to find the soundtrack to the movie online somewhere. All in all though, there are not too many difficult props, so I think it would be a fairly simple project for a low-budget time-constrained college student, while still being fun and challenging.
