Information fluency, in it’s basic form, is the ability to navigate the web efectively, to be able to use search engines for specific purposes, to be able to tell the credibility of the text in questions. This article here is a great starting point for understanding digital information fluency. As a pre-service teacher I think that this is an extremely important concept to understand and acquire. We need to have the toold to navigate the web effectively so that we can aid our students in their use of the web. For me, perhaps one of the most important aspects of information fluency is the ethics of the web. You can do all of the research you want, and be able to narrow searches and use the appropriate language, but if you can not decipher the credibility of the source and determine the significance and relevance to the item in search, than all of the work was for nothing. In order to establish the credibility of the source in question, one needs to be able to search the author or contributor to check out who they are and what they do, if the research supports what is being said. Information fluency is essential to any classroom that uses media, so it should be essential to every classroom.
