My final design assignment. I understand why our esteemed directors said that people would get into these assignments. I’ve had a really great time playing around with Photoshop and GIMP and exploring my creative side.
This poster is a Minimalist Travel Poster for the Emerald City which lies in the heart of the Land of Oz.
Whaddya think? I had the concept pretty early, and this being my second favorite magical place, I played around with the colors and lettering a lot.
The yellow and green were originally much truer to grass and the gold/yellow of the yellow brick road, but the two colors aren’t actually that aesthetically pleasing to look at, so I muted them from there and picked paler ones. Still, it looked a bit strange seeing the two colors meshing like that, so I put a border on either side of the brick.
I played with the idea of grid-ing the brick before transforming it, but it just looked a little funky and I couldn’t quite get it. Even when I was getting close, the grids crowded it and overwhelmed.
The text was at first very bold and blocky, but given the spirit of the journey ahead, I spaced them out, relaxing it. I then made the “follow the yellow brick road” a lower opacity so it’s lighter and more pleasing. I’m very pleased with my final product!
I think I’ve found a sort of style I like in design work… My lyric poster and philosophy poster were also of the same essence. I like the minimal, color-blocked style in decor, art, and fashion. It leaves a lot of room to add and interpret if you leave some of it up to the audience.
Also, looking at my “Oz”, I’m not sure what happened to the space around it…
