What do I associate with the word “storytelling”?
Glad you asked!

Paul Bunyan & Babe

Yupp, that’s Paul Bunyan and Babe!

“Once upon a time…” is a phrase I associate with story telling. So, once upon a time, when I heard storytelling, I would think of folklore and other far-fetched stories. However, as I grew up, storytelling turned into telling real-life stories to one another. Stories that became rumors, and those rumors would spread like wildfire. Rumors that would go so far and become the most ridiculous lies, I mean stories, you had ever heard.

Jump to the digital storytelling age. What is digital storytelling? Well obviously sharing your crazy drunk stories through texts, Facebook, Twitter, and other media sources! Well, there is some truth to that, BUT, digital storytelling is so much more. It’s a way to get your story/thoughts/ideas, no matter what about, across not only to your friends, but your friends friends, and their friends friends. I can’t help but think about the video from the first week of bootcamp. I now see storytelling as a way to get your story out to the world, get feedback, and even inspire others to create their own stories and art.

So what is the difference? Well, with all our technology, we can edit just about anything and manipulate it to EXACTLY how we want it. We can share our original or our altered works to the world. And we can share it faster than we’ve ever thought possible. And that’s what I think the real difference is between storytelling and putting “digital” in front of it.
