Radio Story I listened to

The radio show I listened to this week was:  Sherlock Holmes.  I listened to two episodes of this radio show which included 1. A Case of Identity (1948) and 2. A Scandal in Bohemia (1954).  I really enjoyed listening to the radio shows because I have never really listened to a radio show before.  I usually just listen to music on the radio and it’s just usually in the background while I’m doing other stuff. Or I usually turn off the radio after a while because I get sick of the commercials.  I picked Sherlock Holmes because I’m more familiar with this stories, and I like mystery/detective stories. While I listened to the plot of the story I also tried to focus on how the show was being produced.

A Case of Identity (1948):

This story was about a girl Mary Sutherland that has fallen in love with someone her step father does not approve of (her biological father died).  She then goes to Sherlock Holmes and recounts her story:  She was about to get married to this guy she loves, but he doesn’t show up at the church.   Mary tells Holmes her story and he tries to figure out when it was.  Her mom was all for her relationship with this one guy.    She doesn’t know much about her lover but she tells her story.  She loved this guy and after just a few days they decide to get married.  In the radio show there is a flashback to wedding day.  When this flashback occurs it is Mary and her mom getting ready for her wedding day.  Mary’s mom greets lover and then her lover greets Mary then he leaves with mom.  Receives telegram that her step dad is coming home.  Worried the lover doesn’t want to love step dad tear love apart, Lover says to swear love to him.  Mary then goes to get a cab with mom, to go to church, lovers car arrives at church but he doesn’t get out of car.  Something is wrong with her lover, and the cab is empty.  Gets left waiting at church.  There is music that fades out and then a commercial for clipper craft comes on.  After the commercial the music comes back on for a bit and then narrator says show has returned.  The show returns with the lover deserting bride at alter.  Too kind to leave, Mary is disappointed and it all comes back to the scene with Holmes.  Holmes says to take case on him, and tells Mary that her lover will never return.  Mary leaves, Holmes solves case-but I won’t give away the ending if you want to listen to the case.  But after the ending there is an announcement for next weeks episodes and thanks to the sponsors.

The effects I noticed when there was music and a narrator introducing the story.  Then the story started and then there was music to fade into a flash back of Mary on her wedding day.  There is also music that introduces a commercial for clipper craft.  Then music returns and the narrator announces the story is back.  At the end of the story the narrator comes back on and announces his brief thoughts on the episode and then what will happen in the next episode.  I did notice a few sound effects, and the way the actor/actresses voices were in the story.  I could hear some back ground noises like those in Foley sound. Since this radio show was produced in  1948 there was not nearly as much technology around today.   So that is why there is not much sound effect in this radio show.  I really enjoyed listening to this radio show because I have never listened to a radio show before so it was something new for me.  Like Abumrad said in his video, I like how when I’m listening to the radio show that I can visualize my own image of what is happening in the show.

A Scandal in Bohemia (1954):

Violin music at beginning announcing who is playing whom.  Then the story begins.  This is a story about when Mr. Watson is visiting Holmes shows him this one letter he has received from a royal home of Europe a visiter that wears a mask.  He then realizes that the man is the King of Bohemia.  there is a break and describes what the masked man looks like.  The masked man comes and identifies himself as king.  He then talks about an issue, and issue with being involved with a young woman when he was young.  The women he was with when he was young has been blackmailing the king to expose a photo to the current woman he is supposed to marry.  He comes to Holmes asking what he should do.  Holmes says he’ll work on the case and will talk to him the following day.  The next day Holmes watches the woman blackmailing the man.  He then resolves the issue with the King of Bohemia and the woman who is blackmailing him.

In this radio show I realized that there was violin music playing at the beginning.  There is also Foley sound but not that much there is a sound with background noise like being in a crowded restaurant.  There is also a flashback event that fades in and out of the story.  This radio story is also old and there wasn’t as much technology around then.  Though the first story and the second one are six years apart I noticed that there was a bit more sound effects that went into producing this radio show than the first one.  At the end of the story the narrator comes back at relfects briefly on the story.  There is then violin music at the end of the story and the story ends.
