Week 4 brought so much more.

Ira and Jad on audio storytelling:

Ira and Jad had very interesting things to say about radio storytelling. Ira talks about the building blocks of stories- anecdotes and moments of reflection. He talks about how finding an interesting story can be the hardest part. Most importantly Ira says that to succeed you must first fail. (I LOVE THIS!) Jad says that radio creates empathy because of the lack of pictures. The lack of pictures helps the listener understand and relate to the broadcaster. This makes radio more intimate.  (View full post!)

Radio Stories:

This week I chose to listen to 3 radio drama broadcasts from The Truth. I listened to “Eat Cake,” “Lucy and the Bike Girl,” and “That’s Democracy.”  I have never listened to audio stories other than just audio books where someone is reading verbatim from the text. This was a very interesting experience that I was honestly dreading. I really did not think they would be as intriguing as they were. I felt like I was watching little mini movies without images. It was really entertaining and each story was very unique. I have NEVER heard a story with any of those story lines or anything even close to them. The sound effects in these stories were great! They made the stories so realistic for me. (View full post!)

DS106 RADIO!

Unfortunately whenever I tuned into ds106 radio this week, there were no live broadcasts. :( I hope I will have better timing in the future. I really like how every time you begin listening to d106 radio, the first thing you hear is the bumper and then it goes to live streaming. While I was listening, I heard quite a few songs and every now and then I would hear a bumper tossed in. When I was listening to ds106 radio the server said there were two listeners. I love how you can see how many listeners there are at that given time. Its pretty cool knowing that someone else is tuned in at the same time as you.

Overall my experience of ds106 radio was very nice. There were only 2 or 3 songs that I didn’t really enjoy, the rest were pretty awesome. I do wish that there was a little more variety in the tunes that were playing though.  I didn’t hear ANY commercials! :) I hate listening to the radio usually because I feel like they play just as many commercials as they do music.  I want to continue tuning in, I really want to hear someone live! It would be amazing to hear a real assignment on ds106 radio. I guess I just need to start tuning it at better times! (View full post!)

Bumper!

I really enjoyed the ds106 radio bumper assignment! Who knew creating a radio bumper could be so fun! I loved listening to all the sound effects on freesound.org. I was constantly changing my bumper when I came across a sound I liked more. I am finally getting the hang of Audacity, I think. I really love my finished bumper product. I love the “Do it now” part, I feel like it is very ds106 appropriate. I decided on not a full on musical bumper because when I am listening to the radio I like it when they have a little slogan or “order” tied into theirs.

Sound Effect Story:
Like many of our ds106 assignments, I was very skeptical about the sound effect story assignment, but I ended up having a lot of fun with it! This assignment really made me feel so much more comfortable using audacity. I found all of my sound effects on freesound.org. I downloaded the sound effects in the order that I wanted to tell my story in. Then I loaded them and trimmed them down one by one using Audacity. I played around with it for a while until I had a final product I was happy with.

I thought forever about what to do my sound effect story about, I wanted to do something that involved a lot of sounds (obviously). I decided to create a story of someone’s typical morning. I believe I used about 10 different sound effects. My story begins with someone snoring, then an alarm going off. Next you can hear someone rolling out of bed and walking to the bathroom. They take a shower, then they pull back the shower curtain and flush the toilet. It amazes me how sound effects can tell a story. I think my view of digital storytelling has finally changed! IT IS SO FREAKING AWESOME!

Daily Creates!

Monday’s assignment was “Tune that Name.” We were to play a small clip of a song in reverse then after a brief break, play the original clip.

I chose “That’s not my Name” by The Ting Tings because it is a fun, peppy song. I thought it would sound pretty cool in reverse and I really enjoyed the outcome! I used Audacity to create this clip, it took me a while to figure out how to do it, but the time was worth it. I loaded the entire song into Audacity and then trimmed it down so I was left with the portion that I wanted to use. Then I copy and pasted the clip (so there were two of them.) And finally, I added the reverse effect to the first copy of the clip. I uploaded the final product to SoundCloud. I hope you liked this song backwards too!

Tuesday’s theme was three! We had to create a photo that had something to do with the number 3.

DSCN0606

I took a picture of my three notebooks! Without these I would probably fail all of my classes, they are essential!

Thursday asked us “Can graffiti be beautiful?

i love 3d sidewalk art!

I think certain types of graffiti can be beautiful. 3D sidewalk art is my favorite though! It always amazes me how talented some people are. 3D sidewalk art almost tells a story, it displays an action a lot of times. I really enjoy how realistic this looks, but if you look closely you can see the concrete squares underneath the art work!

Friday was miniature golf day!

mini golf

I drew this awesome, artistic picture to celebrate this important holiday! (I am artistic, I know) Happy Miniature Golf Day everyone!

Reflection:

This week seemed to take me A LOT longer than the previous weeks. But not in a bad way, I  think it just took me a few tries before I was content with my outcomes. I loved becoming familiar with Audacity and messing around with FreeSound. I think my favorite part of this week was creating my sound effect story. I am very proud of it (hopefully it doesn’t suck). I am really fond of what Ira Glass said about having to fail before you succeed, I have definitely experienced that a ton this week, but I am content with my week four outcome :)
