Audio Storytelling

Ira Glass:

Outlines the idea of storytelling in an audio scenario. He talks about how an action in storytelling leads to the next and next and so forth; this started to branch ideas in my head of what an audio story would include.

He discussed how to draw your audience in you need to bait them, for example in a story what would a quiet house imply to an audience. You need to constantly throw questions out to your audience and answer them along the way in order to keep them engaged.

Two parts to a story:

Anecdote

What is the point of the story?

With out both of these parts your story will become worthless, if you have a great story line but is predictable and brings nothing new to the table it was a waste. And on the other hand if you have a boring follow through to an important subject you lose your audience.

Common Pitfalls:

Talk like yourself, don’t change your voice.

Do not focus on yourself, but the story

Jad Abumrad:

Utilize the lack of pictures in radio, take advantage of your audiences lack of visual representation. Co imagination; Paint a picture, but give the paintbrush to the audience, be connected with your audience. This is the reason why radio has not died and never will
