Look, Listen, Analyze

Choosing between the different clips that we were given a choice of was rather difficult.  Since I love football movies, I went with Any Given Sunday.

Look – With this one, there was a lot of cuts that the clip had.  There seemed to be a great amount of bouncing back and forth between the coach and the players.  This could be very effective since this (I’m assuming) is a speech and it would be very necessary to see the person that is talking.  Although all of the men seem really large, the coach is one of the few people that is actually standing.  That gives him a certain power over the rest of them.  The quality of the light seemed very balanced as well.  The room was well lit throughout the entire speech.  The one thing that I could say that is dark is definitely the uniforms of the players.  I’m sure that was done on purpose.  The camera cuts in this instance definitely guide the story because I can see the emotion in the players as the scene progresses.  I’ve never watched a clip in silent though and looked at the different camera angles and effects though.

Listen – From the start, this sounds like an amazing scene.  Rather than call it a football game, he calls it a battle.  The coach uses spaces in the audio perfectly to promote certain emotions.  He doesn’t speak the same throughout the entire speech.  This is extremely effective because it allows both the people listening in the room and the audience to ruminate on what is being said.  The music kicks in too and gets increasingly important.  It starts off really subtle and soft and then different instruments come in to play.  Just like in the ‘Look’, the music becomes increasingly important.  Throughout the speech, he becomes increasingly aggressive in his voice.  It becomes louder and more important.  This is probably the most amazing football speech that I have heard in my entire life.  There is nothing bad about it at all.  It’s literally a roller coaster because he starts out at the bottom, goes to the top, and then comes back down again.  Then right at the end of the speech he goes right back to the top.

Analyze – This is absolutely brilliant.  The Look and Listen is a perfect blend.  Without both of these, the clip is useless.  Putting the audio to the visual was great in terms of my own viewing because I got to see what I was listening to and listen to what I was seeing.  Like I mentioned already, I’ve never analyzed any video clips like this before.  I watched this clip maybe three or four times with the audio and the video together.  In viewing the clip both with audio and video, it hit home way more than just listening to the audio or the video.  There were times that he was talking and the camera was on him but he wasn’t moving his mouth.  That was probably the one thing that I wasn’t able to catch when I was viewing them individually.  I literally got goosebumps watching this clip because of how powerful it was.  If you haven’t seen this clip, definitely give it a watch!  In terms of the different video techniques that I researched, this one just used a lot of cutting from one to the other.  There really wasn’t anything flashy about this clip in terms of amazing techniques.  What made it so effective was the dialogue and the emotion that was found in the players’ faces.
