The meaning of storytelling

The word storytelling brings a lot of thoughts to my mind.

First, when I think of the word “storytelling” I flash back to 4-5 year old me and my great grandma “gran” and asking her to tell me about the “good ole days”. I specifically remember her telling me about the time her hair clip got caught in a cow’s tail (don’t ask me how that happened) and subsequently she got drug around the yard! haha!!

Another type of “storytelling” that comes to mind is just everyday chit chat with my family and friends. Stories from their day, their experiences, etc. It could be a story about some person they saw in the grocery store who had a cart full of bananas or it could be a story about their long lost cousin from Albania.

To me, “storytelling” is anything that a person(s) shares with another person they are surrounded by. To me the best stories involve people, an interesting plot, and hopefully some funny parts too.

On the other hand, when considering the meaning of “digital storytelling” I immediately think of Animea or Cartoons, I guess because I know they are made on computers. I am sure it encompasses so much more than this, but those are my first thoughts when I hear the word.

With that being said, I believe “digital storytelling” can still have the same components of  storytelling, the same that I listed above.

So these are my initial thoughts on Storytelling. I am interested in learning more and gaining a better knowledge and understanding of “digital storytelling.”
